Shelter construction underway at Fish Creek Recreation Area June 7-9

The Rotary Clubs of Juneau will be erecting a covered pavilion at the Fish Creek Recreation Area in North Douglas from Friday, June 7 through Sunday, June 9. The shelter will be constructed on the raised meadow adjacent to the parking lot, overlooking the pond.

During this time, we ask park users to allow work crews space to construct the shelter and maneuver materials between the parking lot and the building site. Crews may also be performing light brush removal and landscaping in the area.

Please stay aware of your surroundings as you take advantage of the beautiful weather to enjoy the recreation area this weekend.

This project is a cooperative effort between the Rotary Clubs of Juneau and the CBJ Parks & Recreation Department.

City and Borough of Juneau and cruise lines sign Memorandum of Agreement on port capacity

The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) and cruise lines calling the port have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to help manage visitor industry volume in the capital city by establishing a limit of 16,000 lower berths per day, with 12,000 on Saturday.

The agreement also includes a commitment to meet annually to optimize the schedule, review visitor numbers and discuss community goals. Negotiated by CBJ and Cruise Lines International Association in Alaska (CLIA), the latest MOA is based on recommendations established by the Visitor Industry Task Force (VITF) in 2021 and furthers the partnership among the parties.

“This latest agreement reflects the industry’s ongoing commitment to work with CBJ and the residents of Juneau to deliver win-win partnerships.  Cruise lines are committed to being strong partners with the community and the City’s leadership has been instrumental in maintaining a dialogue to foster solutions to the issues highlighted by the VITF,” said Renée Limoge Reeve, Vice President of Government and Community Relations at CLIA. “We’ve heard the community’s concerns and will continue to partner with CBJ to improve the experience of residents and visitors alike.”

The daily thresholds recognize the need to preserve resident and visitor experience and provide a predictable market for the many local businesses that rely on the cruise industry. It also demonstrates partnership and collaboration between the community and industry as they work together to maintain a vibrant and sustainable visitor industry in Juneau and Southeast Alaska.

“The cruise industry is vital to our local economy, and we need to improve our infrastructure and grow our tour capacity to create a great guest experience and reduce impacts on residents,” said Juneau Visitor Industry Director Alexandra Pierce. “With this agreement, we are committing to a cap to manage our busiest days and to meet annually to ensure that our visitor numbers remain sustainable. This work is difficult, time consuming, and extremely important for our community. We appreciate the partners who helped us get here.”

Perseverance Trail closed from Granite Creek to upper Red Mill starting June 3

Perseverance Trail will be closed from the Granite Creek intersection to the Upper Red Mill juncture starting Monday, June 3 while the bridge at Gold Creek (mile 2.5) is replaced. The trail segment will be closed until installation of the new bridge is complete.

Beginning Monday, Trail Mix crews will dismantle and remove the old bridge. Later in the week, depending on weather conditions, helicopter crews will sling materials, bridge beams, and equipment to the site.

Trail users can access Granite Creek Basin Trail and Silverbow Basin via the Red Mill Trail.

Please follow signed detours and avoid the construction site for the safety of yourself and others. We appreciate your patience and cooperation so the Trail Mix crew can safely and efficiently install the new bridge and re-open the trail as soon as possible.

New parking tools improve efficiency for JPD, convenience for drivers

New parking system tools go into use this week, allowing JPD Community Service Officers to save time enforcing parking rules and Juneau drivers to more easily pay and appeal citations. These tools are part of major 2024 improvements to bring CBJ parking systems up to date—improving efficiency, saving resources, and making parking easier for Juneau drivers.

Starting this week, Juneau drivers will be able to pay or contest parking citations online at juneau.citationportal.com. Can’t find your paper citation slip? You can look up your citation with a license plate number or VIN. Pay online with a credit or debit card.

You can also continue to pay or contest citations in person at City Hall (155 Heritage Way). Pay in person with cash or check at the first floor Cash Office and contest at the second floor Manager’s Office. Please note that payments will no longer be received or processed at the JPD building.

Meanwhile, Community Service Officers have begun issuing printed parking citations—a major time saver over writing each citation by hand—and will now check plates in the downtown parking zone electronically, allowing JPD to more effectively enforce the parking regulations that have been in effect since 2010.

As a reminder, on-street parking within the downtown parking zone is limited to a total of two hours per day for all vehicles except those with ADA tags. Time limits are enforced from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). If you need a refresher on downtown parking rules, visit the CBJ Parking page.

For questions, please contact CBJ Parks & Recreation at [email protected] or (907) 586-5226 ext. 2.
