Reminder: Rate changes went into effect January 1

Please be aware that a water and sewer rate increase went into effect January 1, 2020. The City & Borough of Juneau Assembly in August approved increases to both the water and sewer utility rates. The 4 percent rate increase went into effect January 1. Find the new rates here. Simultaneously, the household hazardous waste fee will be removed from utility bills.

Please expect the changes to your billing statements. All Bill-Pay customers will need to update their accounts to reflect the new rates in order to stay current.

Following the January 1, 2020 increase, there will be subsequent 2 percent increases to water and sewer fees in July 2021, July 2022, July 2023, and July 2024. These increases keep pace with inflationary cost increases. Revenue generated goes toward costs for operating and maintaining major water and wastewater infrastructure systems, debt financing from Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation loans, and capital projects directed at failing infrastructure or regulatory compliance. For a copy of adopted ordinances and associated documents, please click here.

Different classes of rate payers will see different net results, but, generally, the reduction in the household hazardous waste fee offsets the water and sewer rate increases.

How to prevent frozen water pipes

Colder temperatures mean your water pipes are at risk of freezing. If your water pipes are not properly insulated or maintained, you could be at risk of being without running water during a freeze-up or a pipe bursting and causing flooding and damage to your home or business. To prevent frozen water pipes, the City and Borough of Juneau recommends the following preventative measures:

  • Leave a pencil thin trickle of water running in the sink to keep water circulating
  • Close crawl space vents
  • Insulate pipes properly
  • Ensure heat tapes are plugged in and functioning
  • Turn off hose bibs, disconnect any hoses, and ensure they are properly insulated

In the event that you do experience frozen pipes, contact a plumber or contractor. CBJ does not have the ability to thaw frozen water pipes.

The Emergency Water Turn-Off contact is 586-0393 Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. or 586-2165 after hours.

Water line flushing to occur Sept. 9 thru October

Beginning the week of September 9, 2019, the City and Borough of Juneau Water Utility will begin flushing the water distribution system. Work is scheduled to begin downtown, working north to the hospital, crossing over to Douglas, then on to the Lemon Creek area, proceeding to the Mendenhall Valley, and then out to the Tee Harbor area. This work will continue over the next few months.

Work will occur between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, and will be tentatively completed by the end of October.

Customers may encounter water discoloration or minor disruptions in service.  To clear the discoloration, first wait until the work crew leaves the area, then run the cold water tap (preferably in your bathtub) until the water runs clear.

Please watch for crews working in the roadway, use caution, and obey traffic controls.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

For more information, contact the CBJ Utilities Administration at 586-0393. For after-hours emergencies, call 586-2165.
