Taku Harbor is a modest, secluded bay that is located on the eastern shore of Stephens Passage. It is about 22 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska. While in the early 1900s Taku Harbor used to operate a major fishing cannery, now it is used as an over-night mooring place for commercial fishermen and recreational boaters. There are two public floats in the bay that vessels tie up to. The Taku Harbor float access shore and offers approximately 890lf of side tie moorage. The Stockade Point float does not access shore and offers approximately 300 lf of side tie moorage. Taku Harbor offers both fishing and crabbing opportunities.
About the Downtown Cruise Ship Berths
Juneau has two cruise ship docks located in the downtown waterfront. There are also two private cruise ship docks in the area. Together they serve over 1 Million passengers a season (May through September).
The city owned docks provide berthing for one Panamax ship up to 1,000 feet in length and one post-Panamax ship up to 1,100 feet in length.
Public amenities in this area include a pedestrian promenade, visitor center, bus staging, public parking, and a Port/Customs Building housing the Port of Juneau Field Office and the offices of the US Customs and Border Protection. All of these facilities have been built within the last five years which provide a safe, efficient, and pleasant experience for visitors and locals alike. Other amenities nearby include a grocery store, restaurants, gift shops, coffee shops with wifi, a public library with public computers, a post office, and public transportation.
With the completion of the Juneau Cruise ship berths in 2017, it has greatly expanded the passenger capacity of the port. CBJ continues to develop its uplands to support the increase passenger and pedestrian traffic along the waterfront with careful and deliberate planning efforts to meet future needs. Specifically, in 2019, CBJ awarded a construction project to expand the waterfront seawalk and to create additional bus transportation staging areas.
