Ownership

In my four years of employment with the CBJ, there has never been more emphasis on making improvements. Management wants employees to step up as leaders. A cultural change has occurred for many departments and continues for many more. In this safety minute, my wish is to plant in your minds a sense of ownership. One barrier to ownership that stands in the way is blame.

I challenge you take on this barrier by committing your head, heart, and hands to fix the safety issues rather than affix blame to someone or something else. This is your City. You make it function safely.   The moment you start choosing to make things safe, is the moment you begin to remove the blame barrier.

HazCom

The CBJ must ensure that each hazardous chemical covered by OSHA’s hazard communication standard (HazCom) has an appropriate label that remains firmly attached and legible; just as importantly, we must make sure that all exposed employees know how to read the label and use the information it conveys to protect themselves.

The CBJ must also have a physical agent data sheet (PADS) for heat stress, cold stress, hand-arm (segmental) vibration, ionizing radiation, lasers, noise, radio frequency and microwave radiation, or ultraviolet radiation that exceeds the threshold (1996 ACGIH-TLV) if it is present in the workplace. Each physical agent data sheet must be in English, be kept in any form, including but not limited to, in a manual of operating procedures, and may be designed to cover groups of physical agents if appropriate, and must be readily accessible during each work shift to employees at their work areas.

First Aid Kits

One frequent topic employees ask me about is our first aid kits. To ensure you have a proper first aid kit and that it is being managed properly:

  1. Look for an “ANSI Z308” kit – Class A for most work areas, Class B for broader range of injuries/risks
  2. Check first aid kit contents before placing them in service and check them regularly afterwards
  3. All employees should be informed as to its location, which should be easily accessible
