How to prevent frozen water pipes

Colder temperatures mean your water pipes are at risk of freezing. If your water pipes are not properly insulated or maintained, you could be at risk of being without running water during a freeze-up or a pipe bursting and causing flooding and damage to your home or business. To prevent frozen water pipes, the City and Borough of Juneau recommends the following preventative measures:

  • Leave a pencil-thin trickle of water running in the sink to keep water circulating
  • Ensure crawl space vents are closed
  • Ensure pipes are properly insulated
  • Ensure heat tapes are plugged in and functioning
  • Turn off hose bibs, disconnect any hoses, and ensure they are properly insulated

In the event that you do experience frozen pipes, contact a plumber or contractor. CBJ does not have the ability to thaw frozen water pipes.

The Emergency Water Turn-Off contact is 907-586-0393 Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 907-586-2165 after hours.

Hydrant repair & controlled water main shutdown will cause service disruptions out the road Oct. 29-30

The City and Borough of Juneau Utilities Division & Admiralty Construction crews will be performing a repair on a 10-foot deep fire hydrant in the vicinity of the Auke Bay Ferry Terminal. To guarantee the safety of work crews, the CBJ will be required to shut down the water main. Work crews will begin preliminary digging and damage investigation this Friday, October 29, 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. with the major amount of repair work occurring on Saturday, October 30, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Residents from the Auke Bay Ferry Terminal to Cohen Drive are likely to experience water service disruptions during these times.

Due to a CBJ water reservoir in the Lena area, water will still be available to area residents, but CBJ Utilities Division is asking residents from the Auke Bay Ferry Terminal to Cohen Drive to limit water usage during the impacted times: Friday, October 29, 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday, October 30, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Any significant amount of water usage during the repair times will likely cause reduced pressure and significant pressure losses to residents further out the road, particularly on the uphill side of Glacier Highway. CBJ hopes to restore water to the affected residents in the evenings.

Ways to limit water include:

  • Avoid showering or bathing
  • Avoid doing laundry
  • Avoid using the dish washer or running the water to wash dishes
  • Plan ahead: Store water in buckets for flushing toilets or in jugs/bottles for drinking ahead of the impacted times
  • Plan ahead: Fill your bathtub ahead of time to store additional water.

For more information, contact the CBJ Utilities Division at 907-586-0393, Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

If calling outside business hours or on weekends, contact the CBJ Utilities After-Hours line at 907-586-2165
