Augustus Brown Swimming Pool (minus rec pool) reopens & other changes

Augustus Brown Swimming Pool reopens today – Monday, March 7 – after a three-week closure to address multiple deferred maintenance projects. The lap pool, fitness deck, and locker rooms are open. Unfortunately, the recreation pool (small pool) will remain closed until the replacement of an essential component arrives and is replaced, which is likely to occur late March. In addition, Juneau Pools has expanded operations at Dimond Park Aquatic Center, as well as Augustus Brown. The following changes have been made to pool operations:

  • increased capacities
  • saunas reopened
  • weekend open swims resume
  • lane and event room rentals available

Full facility rentals and instructional classes (including swim lessons, fitness classes, and health and safety courses) will resume in late March.

StoryPath is back: March 4-6 is “Who Lives Near A Glacier?”

The City and Borough of Juneau Parks & Recreation is partnering with Juneau Education Association and Juneau Public Libraries to bring StoryPath to the Overstreet Park Seawalk. Three books by Alaskan writers and illustrators will be featured over three weekends in March and April. Each StoryPath will feature framed pages of the story that you can read as you walk the Seawalk.

  • StoryPath #1: Who Lives Near A Glacier? – March 4-6

  • StoryPath #2: Little Red Snapperhood – March 18-20
    Written and illustrated by Neal Gilbertsen and Evon Zerbetz
  • StoryPath #3: You Are Home With Me – April 1-3
    Written and illustrated by Sarah Asper-Smith and Mitchell Watley

StoryPath, part of Juneau Education Association’s Read Across Alaska program, promotes reading, physical activity, and getting outside.

After each StoryPath, there will be a drawing for the book. Simply complete the short survey using the QR code found at the end of the StoryPath and be entered to win your own copy of the book. The drawing for the first StoryPath book Who Lives Near a Glacier? will take place on Monday, March 7.

Application period for a Marine Park vending permit runs March 1 – 14

Three vending locations are available in Marine Park for the 2022 summer season. Individuals and businesses interested in being a commercial vendor in Marine Park should apply by 4:30 p.m. on March 14 to the City and Borough of Juneau Parks & Recreation Department. Find the vending permit application here and the Request for Interest here.

Marine Park is located in Downtown Juneau across from City Hall, at the end of the Seawalk. The monthly permit fee is $1,000. Each vending location measures 10 feet by 10 feet.

Please note: This application does not include vending on downtown sidewalks or street vending; for those locations please contact the Community Development Department’s Permit Center at 907-586-0770.

Registration for Parks & Recreation Youth Volleyball opens Tuesday, March 1

Registration for Parks & Recreation’s Youth Volleyball for grades 4-5 and 6-8 opens Tuesday, March 1. Registration runs through March 13 and costs $55. Late registration starting March 14 will incur a $10 late fee. Register online (look under “Youth & Teen”) starting 8 a.m. on Tuesday, March 1.

This is a great opportunity for youth to learn a new sport or improve their volleyball skills. The season runs mid-April through the beginning of June. Teams – all coed – will practice once a week for one hour. Games will take place on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Scholarships are available. To apply, fill out a paper Volleyball Registration Form and a scholarship form.

Youth Volleyball relies on volunteer coaches and parent volunteers. If you’re interested, contact Recreation Coordinator Amanda Lovejoy at 907-586-2635 ext. 4156 or [email protected] for more information.

Again, registration for Youth Volleyball starts 8 a.m. Tuesday, March 1. Register online, or fill out the paper Volleyball Registration Form. Registration is first-come, first-served. All registrations received after the session is full will be placed on a waitlist.
