New pay-by-phone parking option for off-street parking begins March 27

Beginning Wednesday, March 27 a new pay-by-phone option will be available for CBJ’s hourly parking lots in Downtown Juneau, including Shopper’s Lot, North Franklin Lot, and the Marine Park Garage (Level 1). No changes are being made to parking fees ($0.75 per hour) or enforcement hours (8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday).

Using the free ParkSmarter app, customers can now pay for parking with a credit or debit card, add time to a parking session, and obtain receipts. The free app is available for download on both iOS and Android devices. The ParkSmarter app will also be available at CBJ Docks & Harbors facilities in May, along with new pay stations.

The ParkSmarter app is one way that CBJ is modernizing parking management. In the next few weeks, new pay stations that accept coins and credit/debit cards will replace mechanical coin boxes at off-street parking lots. Customers will also be able to purchase parking permits, pay fines, and appeal citations online.

For more information, please contact Juneau Parks & Recreation at 907-586-5226 or visit the CBJ parking website.

Registration for Parks & Rec summer camps opens April 1

CBJ Parks & Recreation will offer several weeklong day camps throughout the summer for children ages 5 – 13. Online registration opens Monday, April 1, at noon (click the “Youth & Teen” tab). Each weeklong camp costs $118.75-$170 + tax. A total of 178 spaces are available.

Camps are offered at Zach Gordon Youth Center and Dimond Park. Each weeklong ZGYC camp focuses on a different theme, including arts and crafts, hiking and the outdoors, sports and games, and even real-world DnD. Schedules range from morning- and afternoon-only camps to all-day sessions.

Meanwhile, the Dimond Park Adventure Camps combine swimming and water games at Dimond Park Aquatic Center (DPAC) with activities at Dimond Park Field House and surrounding trails. Please note that, unlike ZGYC summer camps, campers must be dropped off at DPAC and picked up at the Field House.

Find complete camp descriptions and details on ZGYC’s summer camps page.

Scholarships are available for all camps. Contact Recreation Coordinator Amanda Lovejoy at (907) 586-2635 ext. 4156 or [email protected] for more information on how to register with a scholarship.

For more information about ZGYC summer camps, contact Zach Gordon Youth Center’s Mike Williams at [email protected] or (907) 586-2635.

Celebrate spring by adopting a flower

Every year, the City and Borough of Juneau relies on the generosity of local citizens to add beautiful flowers to Juneau’s landscape through the Adopt-A-Flower program. All donations go to funding 200 hanging baskets, 60 flower barrels, and 50 flower beds and planters seen throughout town, from the Juneau International Airport to Downtown Juneau. Donate online through the Parks & Recreation registration catalog (look under Special Events). All donations received by April 30 will be recognized on an Adopt-A-Flower sign displayed at Marine Park Plaza.

Most of the flowers that CBJ plants around town start as seedlings in CBJ’s Mendenhall Valley greenhouse. In preparation for the summer season, Parks & Recreation Landscape Division staff members plant and care for more than 16,000 seedlings. The flowers are planted in May.

Donations for the Adopt-A-Flower program come in various funding levels:

  • Seedling Sponsor $15 – $99
  • Flower Bed Sponsor $100 – $249
  • Flower Barrel Sponsor $250 – $499
  • Hanging Basket Sponsor $500 and up

The first five people who donate $500 or above will receive a hanging basket from the landscape crew. Donate online through the Parks & Recreation registration catalog (click on the Special Events tab).
