Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool closed April 22-26

Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool will be temporarily closed to the public from Monday, April 22 through Friday, April 26 while the women’s locker room floors are refinished to improve drainage. Following the recent reopening of the facility, an issue affecting drainage was identified, requiring immediate corrective action. During the temporary closure, Dimond Park Aquatic Center will be open to the community.

Please also note that AGB Pool will be closed from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from April 9-18 for maintenance leading up to the closure. Visit the Juneau Pools website for complete hours at both facilities.

Proposed Regulation: Special Event User Permits – Public Comment Period Now Open through April 29

NOTICE OF PROPOSED CHANGES TO REGULATION
AMENDMENT OF TITLE 11, CHAPTER 04
COMMERCIAL USE OF PARKS AND RECREATION FACILITIES AND TRAILS

Purpose:
Notice is given that the Parks & Recreation Department has proposed to amend Title 11 of the Administrative Code of Regulations to issue special use permits for gatherings of more than 100 people within the limits of municipal parks and recreation areas. The regulation is proposed for adoption pursuant to CBJ’s Code for Procedure for Adopting Regulations, 01.60.200 – 01.60.260.

NEW Proposed Regulation:
Interested persons may obtain a full copy of the proposed regulation at any of the CBJ libraries, at the CBJ Clerk office, online at https://juneau.org/law-department/cbj-regulations, or obtain more information by calling Parks & Recreation at 907-586-5226.

Summary:
The proposed regulation would require a permit and conditions for any gathering of more than 100 people within the limits of a municipal park or recreation area. The proposed regulation provides for an application fee established by the City Manager pursuant to CBJ 03.05.050

The assembly will discuss the regulation at the April 29, 2024 Assembly meeting at 7:00 p.m. under “New Business”.

Closures at Dimond Park Aquatic Center April 4-7

The Dimond Park Aquatic Center will be partially or fully closed April 4-7 while the pool hosts the Southeast Alaska Regional Championships swim meet. The fitness deck will be closed beginning Thursday, April 4. The rest of the facility will be closed from 8 a.m. on Friday, April 5 through end of day Sunday, April 7.

Augustus G. Brown swimming pool will be open during the closure. DPAC will reopen for normal hours on Monday, April 8.

Summer hours at Jensen-Olson Arboretum begin April 3

The Jensen-Olson Arboretum will move to summer hours beginning April 3. The grounds will be open to visitors Wednesday – Sunday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and closed to the public Monday and Tuesday.

This year JOA celebrates its 17th year as a free public display garden in Juneau. The highlight of the garden are the many varieties of primroses held in JOA’s Nationally AccreditedTM Collection for the genus Primula (primroses), which begin blooming in April and continue through frost.

JOA is located at 23035 Glacier Hwy. The main parking lot is adjacent to the highway, with accessible parking—closer to the gardens—located down the driveway.

Juneau Pools to offer lifeguard class April 12-14

Parks and Recreation Juneau Pools will offer a lifeguarding class on April 12-14 at Dimond Park Aquatic Center. Participants who successfully complete the class will earn an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, valid for two years. Registration opens Friday, March 29 at 8 a.m. and closes on Thursday, April 11 at noon. Register online via the Parks and Rec registration catalog (under the Juneau Pools tab).

The class will be held on Friday, April 12 from 4 – 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 13 through Sunday, April 14 from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. daily, with an hour-long lunch break included.

Class fees are $250 for general participants but free for those who submit an application for employment as a Juneau Pools lifeguard at the end of the course. The class is open to a maximum of 10 people.

Prerequisites: Complete a pre-course session in the pool prior to the first day of class. The pre-course includes a 300-yard swim, brick retrieval from 10 feet, and treading water for 2 minutes. Must be 15 years old by the last day of class.
