How to Run for Local Office Workshop June 25, 2022 (Deadline to Register 6/16/22)

This October, Juneau voters will elect 3 Assembly members and 2 School Board members.  If you have ever thought of running – now or in the future – please consider attending the 8th annual free “How to Run for Local Office” Workshop on Saturday, June 25, from 9am to 2pm in CBJ Assembly Chambers at 155 S Seward Street.

The Workshop consists of Panel presentations followed by time for Q&A on Panel topics.  Each person who registers – and attends – receives a complete Toolkit of forms, references, and “How To’s”.

CBJ Clerk’s Office Prepares for 2022 Election Season

Many Juneau voters are focused on the upcoming State of Alaska Special, Primary, and General Elections being held in 2022, however, the City and Borough of Juneau conducts its Regular Municipal Election on the first Tuesday of October of every year.

In advance of the October 4, 2022 Regular Municipal Election, the CBJ Clerk’s office is already underway preparing for our local election. Below are some of the recent actions and opportunities for public involvement in the CBJ Election process.

At the April 25, 2022 Regular Assembly Meeting, the Assembly passed a motion to hold the October 4, 2022 Regular Municipal Election as a By Mail Election in accordance with CBJ Code 29.07.360. Linked below are some of the documents related to this upcoming CBJ Election cycle:

The proposed election code changes were forwarded to from the Assembly Committee of the Whole to the Assembly for introduction at the May 16, 2022 Regular Assembly Meeting and it is anticipated they will be scheduled for public hearing at the June 13 Regular Assembly meeting. Anyone from the public wishing to provide comments about the proposed election code changes are encouraged to send them via email to [email protected] and copy [email protected].

Canvass Review Board certifies CBJ’s 2021 Regular By-Mail Municipal Election

The Municipal Clerk’s Offices announces the official certification of the October 5, 2021 CBJ Regular Municipal Election, which was held as a By-Mail Election in partnership with the Municipality of Anchorage. The Canvass Review Board began its work at 10 a.m. this morning and completed its review certifying the election results at approximately 5:30 p.m. See the final results here. More information regarding the details and statistics related to this By-Mail election will be provided in a follow-up report to the Assembly.

Juneau Assembly

With a total of 8,517 votes counted:

  • The Mayor’s race saw Beth Weldon receiving a total of 6,863 votes against 623 ineligible write-in votes.
  • For the Assembly District 1 race, Barbara Blake was elected having received 4,729 votes to Paul Kelly’s 2,066 votes and Troy Wuyts-Smith’s 859 votes with 230 ineligible write-in votes.
  • For the Assembly District 2 seat, Michelle Bonnet Hale was reelected having received 5,541 votes to Kelly Fishler’s 2,438 votes, with 64 ineligible write-ins.

Juneau School Board

For the three Board of Education (School Board) seats:

  • Incumbent Elizabeth (Ebett) Siddon was reelected with 5,781 votes
  • Amber Frommherz was elected having received 5,370 votes
  • Certified write-in candidate Will Muldoon won the third seat with 2,919 votes.
  • The remaining school board candidates not elected received the following votes in descending order: Aaron Spratt with 2,003 votes, Ibn Bailey with 1,740 votes, Thom Buzard with 1,583 votes, Wiljordon Sangster with 1,150 votes, and Kyle Scholl with 358 votes.

The returning and newly elected Board of Education (School Board) members are being sworn into office at a meeting tonight that started at 6 p.m.

Newly-elected Assembly member Barbara Blake and returning members to the Assembly will be sworn in during the Assembly Reorganization meeting on Monday, October 25 at 7 p.m.  At that same meeting, the Assembly will recognize outgoing Deputy Mayor Loren Jones who has concluded nine years of service in the District 1 seat on the Assembly.

October 5, 2021 CBJ Regular Municipal Election- Preliminary Unofficial Results Updated 10/15/21

CBJ Clerk staff has concluded its work with the Municipality of Anchorage Election team in processing the remaining ballots from the By Mail Regular Municipal Election.

The updated preliminary unofficial results are posted to the CBJ Elections webpage at juneau.org/elections. This round of preliminary unofficial results include all ballots that have been approved for counting to date.

As of Friday, October 15, 2021 a total of 8,490 ballots were approved for counting. An additional 339 ballots were received after Election Day without postmarks. There still remain over 300 ballots awaiting signature cure letter responses. Ballots returned from voters that were lacking a signature, personal identifier, or whose signature did not match the signature on file with the State of Alaska Division of Elections have been sent cure letters. If you have received a cure letter, please contact the CBJ Election Call Center at 586-5278 option 4 to ensure your ballot is counted. Voters have until 9:00a.m. on Tuesday, October 19 to contact the CBJ Elections Office to cure their ballots so they can be approved for counting by the Canvass Review Board.

The Canvass Review Board will begin its work on Tuesday, October 19 at 10:00a.m. in the Assembly Chambers at City Hall. Since the Chambers is limited to 20 people due to the current COVID mitigation protocols, anyone wishing to attend to observe the Canvass Review Board will need to make arrangements with the Municipal Clerk’s office by 9a.m. on Tuesday, October 19. There will be 11 open spaces available but priority preference will be given to the media and candidates upon request. Clerk staff will meet with the Canvass Review Board on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 to certify the election. Certification may be delayed on a day-to-day basis, up to three days, depending on the workload before the Canvass Review Board.

Please note that CBJ Offices will be closed for the Alaska Day Holiday on Monday, October 18 but if you have received a cure letter, please contact the Clerk’s office by calling 586-5278 choosing option 4 and leave a message with your name, a good telephone number at which you can be called back, and the requested information on the cure letter if possible.
