Juneau International Airport’s COVID-19 response

The Juneau International Airport, in conjunction with local, state and federal agencies, is responding to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic by implementing measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and help protect the health and safety of the public and employees. The airport remains open as a vital link in and out of Juneau. The airport is closely monitoring the evolving situation and will update the public when necessary. Regardless of what may change, the runway will remain open for medevac flights.

Health and Safety:

  • The airport has increased its cleaning regimen in the terminal facility, including additional disinfecting wipe-downs of surfaces, doors, handrails, ledges, elevator buttons, countertops, bathroom fixtures, etc.
  • Hand sanitizer is provided in high traffic areas throughout the terminal.
  • Airport tenants have also increased cleaning. For more specific information, reach out to the airline or concessionaire.
  • Passengers will see CDC posters throughout the terminal reminding passengers of the symptoms of Coronavirus, measures to take and websites to visit.
  • The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) oversees screening for passengers at Juneau International Airport. See TSA updates here.

Flight and Airline Questions:

Please contact your airline for updates on your flight itinerary, or about measures being taken for health and safety:

Airports work with the Federal Aviation Administration to develop Airport Emergency Plans that look at protocol for all types of emergencies, from aircraft incidents to natural disasters and terroristic acts to the spread of disease. Airports look at continuity of operations for the long run. For Juneau International Airport, this includes working with tenants, federal and state agencies, CBJ, and the public. Airport terminal reconstruction starts next week

A major reconstruction project at the Juneau International Airport begins next week. Work will involve the demolition and reconstruction of the oldest portions of the terminal that house the regional air carriers and airport administrative offices, a new main staircase, up-direction escalator, and two new elevators. In total, about 35,000 sq. ft. of the airport will be reconstructed. The expected completion date is the end of 2021.

Contractor Dawson Construction will begin working on site next week. The $25 million project is funded from federal and local sources, and will update infrastructure at the airport, provide energy efficiencies, and modernize the terminal. It will also feature four new art pieces by artists Rachael Juzeler, Alison Marks, Robert Mills, and Crystal Worl.

During construction, the public can expect slight modifications to the airport’s layout. The regional air carriers have moved to the end of the old terminal (Terminal Annex) and will have a separate entrance from the main terminal. Please pay attention and abide by wayfinding signage posted throughout the airport. For more details, here is the floor plan for the first floor and the floor plan for the second floor.

The Juneau International Airport and the City and Borough of Juneau thank the public for its patience during the reconstruction.

For more information, contact Juneau International Airport Architect Catherine Fritz at 586-0452 or [email protected].

Reminder from the airport: Free parking & waiting options are available

Please remember that when you pick up/drop off passengers at the Juneau International Airport this holiday season, you can park for free in the Short Term lot for up to 15 minutes or wait for free at the Cell Phone Lot.

Short Term parking is the lot closest to the terminal and is useful if you need to go inside the terminal for any reason, like to help a passenger collect bags from the baggage carousel or to help a passenger get to the vehicle. After the first 15 minutes, the Short Term lot becomes a paid option; up to 60 minutes costs $3.

The free Cell Phone Lot waiting area near Alaska Industrial Hardware is an ideal place to wait while a passenger is disembarking the plane and getting luggage. The driver must remain with the vehicle at this lot.

As a reminder, the only activity that can take place on the front curb of the airport terminal is active loading and unloading.
