This is only a drill: Juneau Airport to conduct disaster exercise July 20

The Juneau International Airport is conducting a full-scale simulated aircraft emergency disaster exercise at the airport on Saturday, July 20, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It will involve many emergency response agencies and volunteers roleplaying as injured passengers in a simulated aircraft accident. The public should keep in mind this is only an exercise and not a cause for alarm. The exercise will not disrupt normal airport operations or scheduled flights.

The exercise will take place in the runway area. Several City and Borough of Juneau entities, including Capital City Fire/Rescue, Juneau Police Department, and Bartlett Regional Hospital, as well as outside agencies, like Red Cross, are participating. The exercise will involve increased activity on the airport grounds, like emergency and airport vehicles with flashing lights and sirens. The exercise may involve a live burn simulated fire that could generate a temporary cloud of black smoke.

The parking lot of the Airport Dike Trail/Emergency Vehicle Access Road will be closed on July 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to accommodate parking for volunteers taking part in the exercise. The trail will remain open.

Again, the Juneau International Airport is conducting a full-scale simulated aircraft emergency disaster exercise at the airport on Saturday, July 20, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is only an exercise and not a cause for alarm.

Volunteers needed for airport emergency disaster drill July 20

The Juneau International Airport is seeking volunteers for a full-scale simulated aircraft emergency disaster exercise at the airport on Saturday, July 20, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed to assist in role-playing as injured passengers, distraught family members, and bystanders.

Volunteers are crucial in testing the responsiveness of Juneau’s emergency agencies. The exercise allows the airport and the City and Borough of Juneau to effectively test their emergency action plans. During the exercise, volunteers will interact with Juneau’s first responders, including Capital City Fire/Rescue and Juneau Police Department, and support organizations, like Bartlett Regional Hospital, Red Cross, and other agencies. The Juneau airport conducts a full-scale simulated emergency drill once every three years.

All ages are welcome to volunteer and no prior experience is necessary. Individuals under 18 require parental supervision and/or permission. Snacks and refreshments will be provided. The airport will also host a volunteer pre-event briefing on Friday, July 19 at 5 p.m. to assign roles. To volunteer or for more information, email [email protected].

Walking bridges near Juneau Airport temporarily closed for replacement

The Juneau International Airport will begin replacing two walking bridges in the Jordan Creek Greenbelt area today. Both bridge replacements should be complete sometime next week. Pedestrians are advised to use caution in the area. The work is being done in coordination and with the support of the Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition.

Built in the late 1980s, the bridges between the airport and the Nugget Mall/neighboring businesses are walking shortcuts that are in dire need of replacement. The main bridge will be closed beginning today through Friday, April 19 to install the replacement. The second bridge further upstream (west) will still be accessible until it’s replaced immediately after the main bridge.

The Airport thanks Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition for its support and grant funding for this project.

For more information, contact the Juneau International Airport at 789-7821.

No need to wait at the curb, airport offers free and paid parking options

To comply with federal security regulations and ensure public safety, it is prohibited to park, wait, or leave your vehicle unattended on the front curb of the Juneau International Airport terminal. The penalty for doing so is $100. The only thing that can take place on the front curb is active loading and unloading.

The rule is also not unique to Juneau. Since 9/11, The Transportation Security Administration requires any commercial airport with large, scheduled air carriers to have a clear zone. Aside from the TSA mandate, the four lanes in front of the airport is a road, which allows access for ambulances and other emergency vehicles. Traffic and vehicle congestion in front of the airport is a safety hazard.

Luckily, the airport provides both free and paid options for parking and waiting:

  • A free Cell Phone Lot waiting area is located near Alaska Industrial Hardware. This is an ideal place to wait while a passenger is disembarking the plane and getting luggage. The driver must remain with the vehicle at this lot.
  • Short Term parking, which is the lot closest to the terminal, offers 15 minutes of free parking. This is useful if you need to go inside the terminal for any reason, like to help a passenger collect bags from the baggage carousel or to help a passenger get to the vehicle.
  • After the first 15 minutes, the Short Term parking lot becomes a paid option; up to 60 minutes costs $3. The adjacent Long Term parking lot is another paid parking option.

Again, it is it is prohibited to park, wait, or leave your vehicle unattended on the front curb of the Juneau International Airport terminal. Juneau Police Department officers and certain airport staff members are authorized to issue warnings and tickets for violations. Regardless of enforcement presence, the rule is always in place.
