How and when to use the Juneau Airport testing site, and what to do after testing

Nov. 23, 2020 – This post has been updated. Please see current information here.

At the Juneau International Airport, the City and Borough of Juneau administers COVID-19 testing, as required under the State of Alaska’s Health Mandate 10 on International and Interstate Travel, for:

  • Travelers arriving from out-of-state without an accepted COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure (testing is free for Alaska residents; testing costs $250 for nonresidents)
  • Voucher retesting 7-14 days after arrival (this is free for residents and nonresidents)

The airport also offers free COVID-19 testing to residents for these additional purposes:

  • Alaska residents arriving to Juneau from within the state
  • Alaska residents in Juneau traveling to an Alaskan community that recommends or requires testing prior to entry
  • Alaska residents in Juneau traveling on intrastate Alaska Marine Highway System mainline routes

The Juneau Airport test site offers a non-invasive, nasal swab PCR test. Travelers getting a follow-up test 7-14 days after arrival can return to the Juneau Airport 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. – 4 p.m. daily for the follow-up test; no appointment is required. Outbound intrastate travelers should also visit the Airport for testing during these times. Tests are currently sent to the State of Alaska Public Health Laboratory in Fairbanks and results may take up to 5 days to come back, though turnaround times can be variable.

What to do after you’ve been tested

Under the state mandate, Alaska residents and nonresidents arriving from out of state without negative test results must self-quarantine until test results are returned. All travelers with negative results from the arrival test must follow strict social distancing for 14 days after arrival into Alaska or until they leave Alaska, whichever occurs first; or until they receive negative results from a second test taken between 7-14 days after arrival. For example, if a traveler gets test results 4 days after arriving to Alaska, the traveler would have to strict social distance for 10 additional days, or until they get results from the follow-up test.

Strict social distancing means you may be in an outdoor public place, but you must remain six feet away from anyone not in your immediate household, and you must wear a face covering. You may arrange curbside shopping or have food delivery. You cannot enter restaurants, bars, gyms, community centers, sporting facilities (i.e., ice rinks, gymnasiums, sports domes), office buildings, school or daycare facilities. You cannot participate in any group activities, including sporting events and practices, weddings, funerals, or other gatherings.

Alaska residents getting tested before or after in-state travel are not required to self-quarantine or strict social distance, but should follow the standard COVID-19 precautions of self-isolating if symptoms develop.

Demolition work taking place at Juneau Airport

Demolition work at the Juneau International Airport has begun. The work is part of the Juneau Airport’s Terminal Reconstruction Project to replace the oldest portions of the terminal that house the regional air carriers and airport administrative offices, and to improve both airport operations and energy efficiency of the building.

To allow the demolition work to proceed, the Main Terminal has been separated from the north Terminal Annex. Public access to Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines flights, along with rental cars and terminal concessions remains through the main entrance. Public access to Alaska Sea Planes, Island Air, and U.S. Customs is now through a separate outside entrance to the north Terminal Annex. Passengers must use outside sidewalks between the two buildings. Please pay attention and abide by wayfinding signage posted throughout the airport.

The demolition will primarily occur from the secure airfield side of the building, but the public may notice vibration and noise from the construction activity. The public should watch for trucks hauling debris, and remember that there is no parking or waiting along Shell Simmons Drive. The demolition will take several weeks to complete, then concrete foundations for the new structure will begin. The Juneau Airport Terminal Reconstruction project is scheduled to be complete in Fall 2021.

Juneau Airport provides COVID-19 testing for arriving travelers and follow-up vouchers

Nov. 23, 2020 – The information regarding testing at the Juneau International Airport has been updated. Please see current information here.

To adhere to the revised State of Alaska Health Mandate 10 on travel, Capital City Fire/Rescue has set up COVID-19 testing at Juneau International Airport for arriving passengers and for follow-up voucher testing 7-14 days after arrival.

The state’s revised mandate states that visitors arriving to Alaska from out of state are required to self-quarantine unless they agree to COVID-19 testing. Travelers may enter Alaska without undergoing the full 14-day quarantine if they:

  • Provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of departure; tests taken up to five days before departure will be accepted but travelers need to take another test upon arrival; or
  • Test upon arrival in Alaska and self-quarantine at their own expense until test results are known; or,
  • Belong to the critical infrastructure workforce and follow their company’s protective plan on file with the state; or
  • Previously had COVID-19, are recovered, and can provide evidence of both.

Travelers arriving into Juneau from out of state are able to get a COVID-19 test at the Juneau Airport at no cost. Passengers who test negative prior to arriving or passengers who test at the airport will receive a voucher for a required follow-up test 7 to 14 days after arrival in Alaska. Travelers should minimize interactions until the result from this follow-up test shows negative for COVID-19.

With the voucher, travelers can return to the Juneau Airport for the follow-up test at no cost or contact another health care provider in Juneau to see if the provider will accept the voucher. Follow-up testing at the airport does not require an appointment; an individual can just show up with the voucher during available hours – 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. CCFR recommends individuals come during off peak times – 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

For questions on testing at the Juneau Airport, call Juneau’s COVID-19 Screening Hotline at 586-6000.
