Juneau’s 14-day COVID-19 recap: June 28 – July 11

Over the 14-day period from June 28 to July 11, there were 19 people in Juneau who tested positive for COVID-19 (that’s up from 13 during the previous two weeks):

  • One case (or five percent of the total cases) was part of the American Cruise Lines cluster, which includes cases in both Petersburg and Juneau.
  • Public Health attributed 37 percent of cases to secondary transmission, 32 percent to community spread, 10 percent to out-of-state travel, and 21 percent of the cases remain under investigation.
  • 100 percent of cases were contacted for contact tracing within 24 hours of a positive test being returned.
  • There is case positivity spread across various age groups, racial groups, and more cases in females than males (63 percent/37 percent).

Four variants of concern have been identified in Juneau (Alpha/B1.1.7, Beta/B.1.351, Gamma/P1, and Delta/B.1.617.2/AY.1). Variants appear to be contained but the public is reminded to follow appropriate precautions when traveling.

Vaccine update:

  • 67.7 percent of the total population of Juneau has received at least 1 dose of vaccine and 64 percent has completed the vaccine series.
  • 91 percent of the population in Juneau age 65+ has received at least one dose of vaccine and 88 percent has completed the vaccine series.

CBJ reports five new COVID-19 cases in Juneau July 10-12

The City and Borough of Juneau Emergency Operations Center reports five new individuals – four resident and one nonresident – identified with COVID-19 in Juneau for July 10-12. Of the resident cases, Public Health attributes two community spread and two are under investigation. The nonresident is a tourist.

Cumulatively, Juneau has had 1,394 residents test positive for COVID-19 and 173 nonresidents. There are six active cases in Juneau and 1,556 individuals have recovered. All individuals with active cases of COVID-19 are in isolation.

Statewide, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reports 174 new people identified with COVID-19 in the past three days – 159 are residents and 15 are nonresidents. The state also reports two deaths – a female Anchorage resident in her 70s and a male Anchorage resident in his 80s – bringing the total number of resident deaths to 374. Alaska has had 68,951 cumulative resident cases of COVID-19 and a total of 2,954 nonresidents.

After detecting COVID-19, unvaccinated crew of American Constellation will quarantine onboard ship while in Juneau

The small cruise ship American Constellation is en route to Juneau from Petersburg after three people tested positive for COVID-19. The American Cruise Lines ship left Petersburg this afternoon and is due to arrive in Juneau tomorrow, July 10, around 3 or 4 a.m. where it will stay for the next 10 days. The three individuals who tested positive for COVID-19, along with their close contacts, remain in Petersburg to isolate. Any unvaccinated crew members will quarantine aboard the ship in Juneau.

The ship has 162 guests and 52 crew members, including an onboard nurse. All the guests are fully vaccinated. Once here, all guests will be flying out from Juneau.

The City and Borough of Juneau Emergency Operation Center – in coordination with the Alaska Department of Health & Social Services and Juneau Public Health – is working closely with American Cruise Lines on a testing plan for the unvaccinated crew during their quarantine on the ship.

The Constellation’s next voyage scheduled for July 14 has been cancelled.

The City and Borough of Juneau Emergency Operations Center reports two new individuals – one resident and one nonresident – identified with COVID-19 in Juneau for July 8 and 9. Public Health attributes the resident case to community spread; the nonresident case is under investigation.

Cumulatively, Juneau has had 1,390 residents test positive for COVID-19 and 172 nonresidents. There are nine active cases in Juneau and 1,548 individuals have recovered. All individuals with active cases of COVID-19 are in isolation.

The state also reports two deaths – a female Anchorage resident in her 40s and a male Hyder resident in his 80s – bringing the total number of resident deaths to 372. Alaska has had 68,791 cumulative resident cases of COVID-19 and a total of 2,940 nonresidents.

CBJ reports seven new COVID-19 cases in Juneau July 3-7

The City and Borough of Juneau Emergency Operations Center reports seven new individuals identified with COVID-19 in Juneau for July 3 – 7. Six individuals are residents and one is a nonresident. Of the resident cases, Public Health attributes three cases to secondary transmission, one to community spread, and two are under investigation. The nonresident is a visitor.

Cumulatively, Juneau has had 1,389 residents test positive for COVID-19 and 171 nonresidents. There are 11 active cases in Juneau and 1,544 individuals have recovered. All individuals with active cases of COVID-19 are in isolation. There are currently two people with COVID-19 hospitalized at Bartlett Regional Hospital.

Statewide, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services reports 214 new people identified with COVID-19 in the past five days – 198 are residents and 16 are nonresidents. Alaska has had 68,674 cumulative resident cases of COVID-19 and a total of 2,924 nonresidents.
