Augustus Brown Pool Celebrates 50 Years with Major Renovations

February 23, 2023 – News

The Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool will close for major renovations from April 3, 2023 through early 2024, as the pool celebrates 50 years serving the Juneau community. These important renovations will make AGB more accessible, energy-efficient, and user-friendly, combining deferred maintenance with functional improvements to prepare AGB for a new era of Juneau swimmers.

In the lead-up to renovations, Juneau Pools will host several special events including 50th Anniversary Free Swims and Dog Day at AGB. Dates and times will be announced shortly. A children’s art project will also give young Juneau swimmers the opportunity to see their art become a part of the new pool; see below for more information.

During the closure, all AGB pool memberships will be valid at Dimond Park Aquatic Center. DPAC will offer expanded hours and programs beginning this summer in anticipation of increased community use.

Complete schedules for both AGB and DPAC are available on the Juneau Pools website and will be updated in the coming months as pool construction begins.

The Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool first opened to the public on February 24, 1973—only to be temporarily closed a week later due to energy conservation demands.  The pool was officially dedicated and reopened on April 28, 1973 and has been a cherished Juneau institution ever since.

Renovation Information

Juneau Pools is excited to update Juneau’s original community pool with renovations to make AGB more efficient, accessible, and functional. Major steps include new efficient boiler heating plants, air handling units, and LED lighting. The main entry will be fully renovated with a new ADA ramp, entry sidewalk, entry stairs, and interior doors powered with ADA openers. Other improvements include a new public address (PA) system; new plaster, tiling, and fiberglass doors; and upgrades to locker rooms, family changing room, and sauna.

A full project description is available on the Parks & Rec project page.

AGB 50 Years Children’s Art Project

Renovations include a new art installation uniting the work of Juneau children past and present. The art feature will incorporate the existing artwork tiles in the AGB locker rooms—designed in 1999 by Juneau second and third graders—alongside new artwork from today’s young swimmers.

Children age 12 and under are encouraged to use the AGB tile art template, available online or at the pool, to create artwork celebrating their favorite memories at Augustus Brown Pool. A selection of these works will be showcased with the original youth art tiles in a new location at the pool. Submissions are open February 24 through March 31 at the AGB front desk, one entry per child.

All artists will receive one Parks & Recreation admission pass and be entered into a drawing for a one-month youth swim pass. The winner of the drawing will be announced at the 50th Anniversary Open Swim on April 1.
