Augustus Brown Pool 50th Anniversary Celebrations Continue with Free Swims and Children’s Art Project

March 22, 2023 – News

Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool continues to celebrate 50 years as Juneau’s community pool with upcoming events including free anniversary swim sessions and an ongoing children’s community art project.

Free anniversary swims will take place over two sessions on Saturday, April 1:

  • Session 1: 3 – 4 p.m.
  • Session 2: 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Each session is limited to 100 swimmers. Admission is first-come, first-served—no registration necessary. Swim sessions are free of charge thanks to the generous sponsorship of Juneau-Gastineau Rotary Club.

AGB’s 50th anniversary celebrations coincide with major renovations to make the pool more accessible, energy-efficient, and user-friendly. Alongside the renovations, the pool lobby will welcome a new community art project in honor of the milestone anniversary. The project, titled “Celebrating Generations of Community,” pays homage to the pool’s importance for Juneau children past and present. An aquatic mural will incorporate images of tiles from the current locker room showers—designed by Juneau second and third graders in 1999—alongside ceramic titles featuring artwork submitted by children today.

Aquatics staff are currently accepting artwork submissions from children 12 and under. Download a tile art template online or pick one up at the pool to create an artwork celebrating a favorite memory at AGB. Submissions are open through March 31 at the AGB front desk, one entry per child.

Following the 50th anniversary swims, AGB will host four sessions of Dog Day at the Pool on Sunday, April 2. Some sessions still have space available; visit the Facebook event to find out more or register online through CBJ Parks & Recreation.

On Monday, April 3, AGB will close through early 2024 as renovations begin.
