Cold weather is on the way — take these steps to keep pipes from freezing

With freezing temperatures forecast in the coming days, now is a critical time to take important preventive steps to keep your water pipes from freezing. Water pipes that are not properly insulated or maintained are at risk of freezing and/or bursting—an event that could leave you without running water as well as cause flooding and damage to your home or business.

To prevent frozen water pipes, the City and Borough of Juneau recommends the following preventive measures:

  • Leave a pencil-thin trickle of water running in the sink to keep water circulating
  • Ensure crawl space vents are closed
  • Ensure pipes are properly insulated
  • Ensure heat tapes are plugged in and functioning
  • Turn off hose bibs, disconnect any hoses, and ensure they are properly insulated

In the event that you do experience frozen pipes, contact a plumber or contractor. CBJ does not have the ability to thaw frozen water pipes.

The Emergency Water Turn-Off contact is (907) 586-0393 Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or (907) 586-2165 after hours.

Firewood available for harvest in Lemon Creek – permit required

Coeur Mining has donated logs from a recent site clearing project at their Kensington mine to the City and Borough of Juneau to distribute to residents for firewood.

Starting Thursday, November 8, CBJ will allow permitted residents to harvest up to 8 cords of wood each, with a maximum of 2 cords per person per day. Permits are free and can be found on the CBJ website at bit.ly/4hFFuAU

Please note that the logs are uncut and are still green and cannot be used in home heating this winter. All firewood must be seasoned before use in home heating. Visit the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s Burnwise page at dec.alaska.gov/air/burnwise for more information on seasoning your firewood.

The wood is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and you must have an approved permit to harvest. Permits will remain open until all logs are collected. Harvesters can only work at the site during daylight hours. Please refer to the permit for more information.

Logs are located off Anka Street in an open lot behind Costco and O’Reilly Auto Parts (please see the map above). This is an active haul road, so please be mindful of heavy traffic when entering and exiting the site.

Thank you to Coeur Mining for providing these logs at no cost to Juneau residents.
