Join Parks & Rec and AEYC-SEA for Family Fun Nights at the Field House through April

CBJ Parks & Recreation and AEYC-SEA are excited to host a spring session of Family Fun Nights at the Dimond Park Field House on Fridays through April. This free event is a chance for younger children to run and play indoors during the cold and dark evenings of winter and early spring.

Family Fun Nights will take place at 5 – 6:30 p.m. on the following Fridays:

  • January 3* & 24
  • February 7 & 14
  • March 7 & 21
  • April 11 & 25*

*We’ll kick off and wrap up with extra-long sessions on the first and last nights! January 3 will go from 5 – 7:30 p.m. and April 25 from 4 – 6 p.m.

Although this event is designed for families with young children ages 0-6, older siblings are also welcome. Toys will be set out for play and no registration is required—just show up full of energy!

Please note that access to the Field House track is not included as part of this event.

Join Parks & Rec for Movie in the Park Minions Marathon December 28 – January 25

CBJ Parks & Recreation is about to do something. It’s very very big. Very important. That’s right—it’s a Despicable Me Movie in the Park marathon! Each of the four Despicable Me movies will be presented at a different Parks & Recreation facility over the course of a month. Skate, swim, and run around while you watch, or make yourself comfortable on the sidelines and enjoy the show for free.

Bringing the whole family? Parks & Rec is introducing new family rates starting December 26! Admission to Juneau Pools for up to 2 adults and 3 youth/children is $22, and admission to Treadwell Arena for up to 2 adults and 3 youth is $25.

Despicable Me (PG): Saturday, December 28, at Treadwell Arena

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the show begins at 6:30 p.m. Regular admission rates apply to skaters (passes accepted and first-come, first-serve rental skates included), or watch for free from the bleachers. The maximum capacity is 100 skaters. Bring your appetite—popcorn will be available to purchase!

Despicable Me 2 (PG): Sunday, January 5 at Augustus G. Brown Pool

Locker rooms open at 6:15 p.m. and the show begins at 6:30 p.m. Regular admission rates apply to swimmers (passes accepted), or watch for free from the lobby. The maximum capacity is 75 swimmers, and guests are welcome to queue in the lobby before locker rooms open.

Despicable Me 3 (PG): Sunday, January 19 at Dimond Park Aquatic Center

Locker rooms open at 6:15 p.m. and the show begins at 6:30 p.m. Regular admission rates apply to swimmers (passes accepted), or watch for free from the lobby. The maximum capacity is 100 swimmers, and guests are welcome to queue in the lobby before locker rooms open.

Despicable Me 4 (PG): Saturday, January 25 at Dimond Park Field House

Doors open at 1:45 p.m. and the show begins at 2 p.m. This showing is free for everyone! Bring blankets and pillows to get comfy—low-back chairs are also permitted, just plan to sit to the side or near the back so as not to obstruct others’ view. Please also note that food or drinks other than water are not allowed on the turf.

Registration for winter swim lessons opens December 31

Juneau Pools will offer a new session of swim lessons in all categories—preschool, youth, adult, and Parent & Tot—beginning in January 2025. Registration opens Tuesday, December 31 at noon through the Parks & Rec registration catalog (click on the “Juneau Pools” tab). Registrations will not be taken over the phone, in person, or in advance.

Scholarships are available; complete the online form by Friday, December 27 at noon to apply.

Parent & Tot

Parent & Tot lessons (ages 6 months – 3 years) will be offered at Dimond Park Aquatic Center from January 11 through March 1 (no class January 25). Classes meet Saturday from 9:15 – 10:30 a.m. The cost is $60 + tax.

Adult

Adult lessons (ages 13 and up) will be offered at Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool from January 13 through February 3 (no class January 20). Classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 – 7:15 p.m. The cost is $72 + tax.

Preschool and Youth

Preschool (ages 3-5) and youth (ages 6-12) lessons will be offered at both DPAC and AGB. The cost is $80 + tax.

DPAC will offer Youth Levels 1-4 and Preschool Levels 1-4. Classes meet January 14 through February 6 on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 30 minutes between 4:15 p.m. and 7 p.m.

AGB will offer Youth Levels 1-4 and Preschool Levels 1-3. Classes meet January 13 through February 10 (no class January 20) on Mondays and Wednesdays for 30 minutes between 4:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.

Please be aware that swimmers must meet the registration prerequisites to register for any classes beyond Level 1. Swimmers who have not attended a Juneau Pools swim lesson placement session or passed the preceding class within the last six months will not be able to register for upper level classes. Join neighborhood meeting for proposed LID on January 3, 2025

CBJ will host a public meeting on Friday, January 3 to discuss the proposed Local Improvement District (LID) for the HESCO barrier flood mitigation project to protect against future Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF). The meeting will be held at the Thunder Mountain Middle School Auditorium from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

At the meeting, CBJ staff and representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be on hand to answer questions about the proposed LID ordinance and hear thoughts from those in the neighborhood.

2024 holiday schedule for CBJ offices & facilities

Most City and Borough of Juneau offices and facilities—including City Hall offices, the Juneau Douglas City Museum, and all Juneau Public Library branches—will be closed Wednesday, December 25, and Wednesday, January 1, in observance of the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays.

Here’s a rundown of other services and facilities that have different operating schedules during the holidays:

Capital Transit & CAPITAL AKcess

  • Tuesday, December 24 – Bus service will end early:
    • Last bus to Downtown from the Valley: Route 4 from Auke Bay at 6:24 p.m.
    • Last bus to Downtown from Douglas: Route 1 from Treadwell at 6:33 p.m.
    • Last bus to the Valley from Downtown: Route 3 from DTC at 6:45 p.m.
    • Last bus from Downtown to Douglas: Route 1 from DTC at 7:17 p.m.
    • CAPITAL AKcess service ends at 8 p.m.
  • Wednesday, December 25 – Buses will not be operating
  • Thursday, December 26 – Full service resumes
  • Wednesday, January 1 – Buses will not be operating
  • Thursday, January 2 – Full service resumes

Dimond Park Field House

The Dimond Park Field House track will be closed Tuesday, December 24, Wednesday, December 25, and Wednesday, January 1. As a reminder, track hours and event programming are modified from December 21 through December 31 while DPFH hosts the annual Holiday Cup soccer tournament. See the calendar for full hours.

Eaglecrest Ski Area

Eaglecrest will be closed Wednesday, December 25 and Wednesday, January 1, but otherwise open daily throughout the holidays, including a special event on December 24. Operations may be affected by weather conditions; for the latest information, see the Mountain Report at skieaglecrest.com.

Jensen-Olson Arboretum

Jensen-Olson Arboretum is closed to the public through January 2 and will reopen on Friday, January 3 for winter hours, Friday – Sunday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Juneau Pools

Both Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool and Dimond Park Aquatic Center will close early at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24 and Tuesday, December 31 and remain closed all day on Wednesday, December 25 and Wednesday, January 1. See the DPAC and AGB calendars for full schedules.

Mt. Jumbo Gym

Mt. Jumbo Gym will close at noon on Tuesday, December 24 and Tuesday, December 31 and remain closed all day on Wednesday, December 25 and Wednesday, January 1.

RecycleWorks

RecycleWorks will be closed Wednesday, December 25 and Wednesday, January 1. In addition, the Household Hazardous Waste facility will be closed Thursday, January 2.

Shéiyi X̱aat Hít Youth Shelter

Shéiyi X̱aat Hít Youth Shelter is open throughout the holidays.

Treadwell Arena

Treadwell Arena will be closed Tuesday, December 24, Wednesday, December 25, and Wednesday, January 1. Otherwise, Treadwell is offering a variety of public sessions over the holidays. See the online calendar for a full schedule.

Zach Gordon Youth Center

Zach Gordon Youth Center will close early at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, and remain closed all day on Wednesday, December 25. ZGYC will be open for normal hours on Tuesday, December 31 and close on Wednesday, January 1.
