CBJ launches short-term rental task force

The City & Borough of Juneau has launched a short-term rental task force to investigate the impact of short-term rentals (STRs) on housing availability in Juneau and recommend improvements. The task force, which will be active for approximately five months in total, includes Assembly members and members of the public representing a range of community interests in short-term rentals and housing.

Over the next several months, the task force will review existing short-term rental and housing data, gather feedback from the community at public meetings and in writing, and review different regulatory approaches to STRs (with a focus on long-term housing availability and affordability). The task force will ultimate evaluate and recommend different options for managing short-term rentals in Juneau.

If you have thoughts, suggestions, or proposals to share regarding short-term rentals in Juneau, you’re encouraged to submit them through the task force website. The task force will also host two public forums to gather feedback from the community, with dates to be announced.

The task force will generally meet every other Thursday at 12:10 p.m. in City Hall and over Zoom. Find a complete list of meeting dates on the task force website or the CBJ public meetings calendar.

Join Huna Totem lease open house meetings on January 22 & 23

The community is invited to join CBJ at two open house meetings to discuss a proposed Huna Totem tidelands lease. The meetings will take place in the Assembly Chambers on Wednesday, January 22, from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. and on Thursday, January 23, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Members of the community are encouraged to stop by at any time during meeting hours to discuss the lease and share their thoughts with CBJ.

Huna Totem Corporation is proposing to develop a cruise ship dock and mixed-use development in downtown Juneau on the lot traditionally known as the “subport,” near Egan Drive and Whitter Street. The meetings will solicit input on elements of a proposed lease for the adjacent tidelands. The CBJ Assembly will eventually vote to approve or deny this lease, and that vote will be CBJ’s ultimate approval or denial of the proposed development.

The open house meetings will focus on sharing information about the proposal and soliciting ideas from the public on how the development, if approved, could support community needs.

The public is welcome to share additional feedback with the Assembly via email at [email protected].
