Zach Gordon Youth Center hiring for multiple new positions; apply by Feb. 24

The Zach Gordon Youth Center, a division of the City and Borough of Juneau’s Parks and Recreation Department, is hiring for multiple new positions located at the new, as-yet-to-be-opened Mendenhall Valley area youth shelter for runaway and homeless youth. Positions include:

The Zach Gordon Youth Center values wellness, connection and growth, and its diverse, creative staff are passionate about serving the community. These new positions offer an opportunity to help create an inclusive and caring place for Juneau’s most vulnerable youth.

Juneau Libraries, City Museum & Permit Center return to in-person service; pools & ice rink adjust operations

Due to the City and Borough of Juneau Emergency Operations Center lowering the overall community risk to Level 2 Moderate, some City and Borough of Juneau facilities are returning to in-person service:

  • Juneau Public Libraries: Mendenhall Valley Library and Douglas Library are opening to in-person service today, January 12, at noon, and will operate Monday – Friday, noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. The Downtown Library will remain curbside until January 19 due to ongoing interior construction work.   • Juneau-Douglas City Museum: The City Museum will be open to in-person service Thursday – Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call 586-3572 or email [email protected].
  • Permit Center: The Permit Center is opening to in-person service Wednesday, January 13, and will operate Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Those wishing to conduct business from a distance can still utilize services over the telephone or email. Pre-application conferences will also be available in person, though phone or Zoom remain options if desired. For information on permit applications, plan submittals, and pre-application meetings, visit the Community Development Department website or call 586-0770.
  • Juneau Pools: Augustus Brown Swimming Pool (AGB) & Dimond Park Aquatic Center (DPAC) will end reservations and resume drop-in recreation on January 19 with a maximum capacity of 50 for DPAC and 30 for AGB; visit juneaupools.org for the latest schedules. The fitness area, locker rooms, and showers are open. Sauna, hot tub, slides, and play features remain closed; no group programs or lessons will be offered.
  • Treadwell Ice Arena: Treadwell will have open skates every Friday 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. beginning January 22. Reservations are required. Guests are encouraged to bring their own skates and helmets, but skate rentals are available and included in admission. Maximum capacity on ice is 20; maximum capacity in the building is 50. Zach Gordon Youth Center looking for turkey box donations

This holiday season, Zach Gordon Youth Center is partnering with St. Vincent de Paul Juneau and Love INC to provide turkey boxes for families in Juneau.

The following non-perishable items can be donated at the Zach Gordon Youth Center, the St. Vincent de Paul Office (8617 Teal Street), Super Bear IGA, and Foodland:

  • Boxed Stuffing Mix
  • Instant Mashed Potatoes
  • Canned Yams or Fresh Yams
  • Canned Corn
  • Canned Green Beans
  • Turkey Gravy Mix
  • Canned Jellied Cranberry Sauce
  • Canned or Boxed Chicken Broth

These perishable items can be donated at the St. Vincent de Paul Office on 8617 Teal Street:

  • Turkeys (big need this year)
  • Pies
  • Butter

Have children in K-5 or employ people who do? Take a survey on childcare needs.

In order to get a detailed picture of childcare needs during the pandemic for Juneau families with children in K-5, the City and Borough of Juneau has created two surveys – one for families and one for employers. Take the family survey here. Take the employer survey here.

Data from the survey will help CBJ work with families and businesses to assist in the care of K-5 children during the pandemic. The surveys – each takes about 10 minutes or less – are confidential and results will only be reported in aggregate. The surveys are open now and close November 18.

Parks & Recreation cancels 2020 outdoor soccer program & soccer camp

Juneau Parks and Recreation has made the decision to cancel its 2020 outdoor soccer program and the Juneau Soccer Club (JSC) Soccer camp. The department did not reach this decision lightly; the health and safety of youth participants is of the utmost importance.

Parks and Recreation understands the disappointment in not having a season and appreciates the understanding from families and players.
