Have children in K-5 or employ people who do? Take a survey on childcare needs.

In order to get a detailed picture of childcare needs during the pandemic for Juneau families with children in K-5, the City and Borough of Juneau has created two surveys – one for families and one for employers. Take the family survey here. Take the employer survey here.

Data from the survey will help CBJ work with families and businesses to assist in the care of K-5 children during the pandemic. The surveys – each takes about 10 minutes or less – are confidential and results will only be reported in aggregate. The surveys are open now and close November 18.

Parks & Recreation cancels 2020 outdoor soccer program & soccer camp

Juneau Parks and Recreation has made the decision to cancel its 2020 outdoor soccer program and the Juneau Soccer Club (JSC) Soccer camp. The department did not reach this decision lightly; the health and safety of youth participants is of the utmost importance.

Parks and Recreation understands the disappointment in not having a season and appreciates the understanding from families and players.

Ring in the New Year with Zach Gordon Youth Center

The Zach Gordon Youth Center is hosting a Teen New Year’s Eve Party on Tuesday, December 31, 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the youth center. The free event is for teens ages 14-19.

Festivities include live music featuring Manner and Indigo Gold, taco bar and pel meni, and NBA 2K20 and Madden NFL. The Teen New Year’s Eve Party at Zach Gordon Youth Center is a drug- and alcohol-free event. Limited transportation home is available; call 586-2635 before noon on Tuesday to sign up.

Nov. 9 Coaches Summit in Juneau offers day of professional development & connection

The Zach Gordon Youth Center is hosting an all-day Coaches Summit this Saturday, November 9 at Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 2019 Coaches Summit: Connect. Play. Change The Game provides a day of professional development and connection for volunteer, paid, assistant and head coaches, as well as families of youth who participate in coached sports and other activities.

The keynote speaker is John O’Sullivan, founder of the Changing the Game Project and author of several books on coaching youth sports. A leader in the field of youth sports, O’Sullivan is nationally recognized for his focus on fun and healthy competition over winning. During the summit, he’ll present in the morning, during lunch, in breakout sessions, and as part of a panel discussion.

Other breakout sessions will be led by local leaders in youth sports, child development, and trauma-informed practices. Themes include building resilience, fostering inclusion, as well as an opportunity to hear directly from student athletes. See the full schedule here.

Deadline to submit workshop proposal for Coaches Summit extended to Oct. 14

The deadline to submit workshop proposals for the 2019 Coaches Summit: Connect. Play. Change The Game has been extended to Monday, October 14 at 4:30 p.m. The all-day summit provides a day of professional development and connection for youth coaches in Juneau and around Southeast Alaska. It’s happening November 9 at Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The keynote speaker is John O’Sullivan, founder of the Changing The Game Project and author of several books on coaching youth sports.

Organizer Zach Gordon Youth Center is still looking for workshop presenters for the summit. Areas of interest include trauma-informed coaching, culturally responsive coaching, creating positive relationships with families, identifying substance abuse in youth, program management, behavior management, and inclusive coaching for youth with disabilities.

To present at the summit, submit a workshop proposal by Monday, October 14. Registration to attend the Coaches Summit is currently open.
