Registration for preschool and youth swim lessons opens August 9

Juneau Pools will offer a new session of beginner and intermediate swim lessons for both preschool and youth age groups at Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool in August and September. Registration opens online Friday, August 9 at noon through the Parks & Rec registration catalog (click on the “Juneau Pools” tab). Registrations will not be taken over the phone, in person, or in advance.

Please be aware that swimmers must meet the registration prerequisites to register for any classes beyond Level 1. Swimmers who have not attended a Juneau Pools swim lesson placement session or passed the preceding class within the last six months will not be able to register for upper level classes. To arrange a swim test, please contact Ellen Johnston at (907) 586-0839 ext. 4148.

Classes will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from August 19 through September 11 (with the exception of Labor Day, September 2). Class time slots are scheduled between 4:15 and 7 p.m. and are 30 minutes long. See the registration portal for a detailed class schedule.

Preschool classes are open to children ages 3-5 and youth classes to ages 6-12. Visit juneaupools.org for detailed info about skill levels.

August 6 Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee meeting cancelled

The Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, August 6 has been cancelled.

The next Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee meeting will take place Tuesday, September 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall Chambers and via Zoom.

2024-2025 Treadwell Arena season kicks off with free Back to School Skate on August 8

The ice is back at Treadwell Arena! Shake off the rust and get ready for a new season of skating—and a new school year—at a Back to School Skate on Thursday, August 8 from 3:45 – 5:15 p.m.

This event is free thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Douglas 4th of July Committee. Rental skates are included and are available first come, first served.

Starting in August, Treadwell Arena will host open and family skates as the 2024-2025 season gets underway. See the full schedule at treadwellarena.org.

Explore Capitol Park’s new look at ribbon-cutting on August 3

Join CBJ Parks & Recreation to celebrate the completion of the newly remodeled Capitol Park! Following two years of hard work, the park has a new look—and new places to play. Celebrate on Saturday, August 3 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m., followed by fun and games—including hot dogs, cotton candy, and prizes—until 5 p.m.

Mayor Beth Weldon, CBJ Parks & Recreation Director George Schaaf, Juneau Community Foundation Executive Director Amy Skilbred, and Juneau Park Foundation Vice Chair John Pugh will take part in the ceremony.

The park is located on Seward Street between 5th & 6th Streets. Please be aware that parking in the area is limited. Drivers are encouraged to park in the Downtown Transportation Center garage (free on weekends).

The Capitol Park Improvements project broke ground in August 2021, following several months of  planning and public outreach. New features include ADA accessible playground equipment, a picnic area, an artificial turf field, safety features, art installations, and a paved walkway with beautiful Juneau views.

Registration for summer Parent & Tot swim lessons opens July 30

Juneau Pools will offer Parent & Tot swim lessons at both Dimond Park Aquatic Center and Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool this summer. Registration opens Tuesday, July 30 at noon. Register online through the Parks & Rec registration catalog (click on the “Juneau Pools” tab). Registrations will not be taken over the phone, in person, or in advance.

Parent & Tot Lessons are open to children aged 6 months to 3 years. Each child must be accompanied in the pool by an adult, and children are required to wear swim diapers during class. See the Juneau Pools website for a full class description.

Classes at DPAC will meet August 6-29 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 – 5:30 p.m. The cost is $80 + tax for 8 lessons.

Classes at AGB will meet August 3 – September 14 on Saturdays from 10:15 – 10:45 a.m. (Class will not meet on August 31, Labor Day weekend.) The cost is $60 + tax for 6 lessons.

Each class has 15 spaces available.
