Parks & Rec Candy Cane Hunt returns for the 2024 holidays

Explore Juneau, support local businesses, and win prizes this holiday season in CBJ Parks & Recreation’s Candy Cane Hunt! Print or download a Candy Cane Tracker from the Parks & Rec website, then head out and around town December 3 – 17 to find the printed candy cane numbers in the store windows. The more candy canes you find, the more chances you’ll earn to win prizes.

This year, the Candy Cane Hunt will offer two different trackers, one for Downtown Juneau and one for the Mendenhall Valley. Choose your favorite tracker or complete both for even more tickets in the drawing!

This activity is open to both kids and adults. To enter the prize drawing, submit your Candy Cane Tracker by December 17. The number of tickets you’ll earn depends on how many numbers you find—find all the details on the tracker. And don’t miss a chance to earn bonus tickets by locating the five extra-large candy canes hanging in the windows of CBJ offices and facilities downtown. Take a selfie with each candy cane you find and earn one bonus ticket per selfie!

Some businesses are offering specials for Candy Cane Hunt participants, like a treat, free item, or discount. Look for participating businesses listed on the tracker with an asterisk* and find their special by scanning the QR code on/near their front door.

Parks & Recreation will hold the prize drawing on Wednesday, December 18, and winners will be notified by phone/email and announced on Juneau Parks & Recreation’s Facebook page.

If you don’t have access to a printer, email [email protected] with your mailing address and how many trackers you need. You can also pick one up at the new Parks & Rec office at 1208 Glacier Avenue, Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

For more information, call Parks & Recreation at (907) 586-5226, or visit the Candy Cane Hunt website or the Facebook event.

Winter snow removal tips and guidelines from CBJ Streets

With heavy snow in the streets, CBJ Streets & Fleet Maintenance would like to share some information and reminders about winter snow removal in Juneau.

CBJ Streets crews maintain over 250 lane miles of roads, using 6 motor graders, 4 loaders, 6 sand trucks, and 13 plow trucks. Each winter, more than 3,000 tons of sand are applied to ensure the safety of emergency vehicles, the traveling public, Capital Transit, and school buses.

Heavy snowfall brings challenges to both snow removal crews and property owners alike. We appreciate the work that you are doing to keep your home accessible, as well as your understanding of what our crews are able to accomplish.

Snow removal priorities: Crews clear the streets in order of the following priorities

  1. Clear access for emergency vehicles, public transit, commercial routes, and high-traffic streets
  2. Residential areas
  3. Low-traffic areas, including dead-end streets and cul-de-sacs

Snow berms: Operators make every effort to minimize snow accumulation on private property. However, berms and windrows are unavoidable. Crews do not clear snow—including berms—from driveways.

Sidewalks and driveways: Property owners, landlords, and tenants are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks and driveways. Snow or ice may not be placed on any sidewalk, street, roadway, or parking area (CBJ 72.24.075).

Garbage cans: Keep garbage cans clear! Please place garbage cans at least five feet from the edge of the street to prevent them from being damaged during snow removal.

For more detailed information about snow removal on CBJ-owned streets, please visit juneau.org/engineering-public-works/streets/winter-snow-removal.

Public can submit proposals for Marine Passenger Fee proceeds starting December 2

The City and Borough of Juneau will accept public proposals for projects to be funded with 2025 Marine Passenger Fee proceeds from December 2, 2024 through January 2, 2025. This annual process ensures that all members of the community can have a say in how fees from the cruise ship industry are reinvested in local business and services.

This year, all submissions may be made via a webform that provides more information about the restricted nature of these funds and aims to encourage more successful submissions.

The Marine Passenger Fee, a $5 fee per cruise ship passenger, was established in 1999 by Juneau voters. The fees are designated to fund projects directly related to the visitor industry that enhance the tourism experience in Juneau and offset community impacts created by the cruise ship industry.

The public, including businesses and the visitor industry, are encouraged to submit project proposals to be funded with MPF proceeds. Projects must address an impact made on the community by the cruise ship industry or an aspect of the tourism experience for cruise ship passengers. For a full description of project eligibility, please see CBJ 69.20.120.

The City Manager will develop a draft recommendation list of projects to be funded by Marine Passenger Fee proceeds, followed by a 30-day public comment period. The draft recommendation and all proposals will available at the Marine Passenger Fee Program website.

All Marine Passenger Fee project proposals and comments will be forwarded along with the City Manager’s recommendation list to the Assembly Finance Committee for review, and then to the Assembly for consideration during the upcoming budget cycle.

Proposals must be submitted by January 2, 2025 on the webform or the City Manager’s Office, attention Alexandra Pierce, 155 S. Seward Street, Juneau, Alaska 99801.

For more information, contact CBJ Visitor Industry Director Alexandra Pierce at [email protected] or visit the Marine Passenger Fee Program webpage.
