Why to vaccinate: Dr. Amy Dressel

“If you’re thinking about vaccinating your adolescent against the COVID-19 virus, I would highly encourage you to do so. The Pfizer vaccine for adolescents is safe and highly effective. The best way to prevent this disease from spreading and allowing the virus to mutate is to vaccinate our community. Vaccinating our children from COVID-19 protects them from the long-term side effects of COVID, but it also protects the immune-compromised and the elderly population from getting sick, as well as preventing the virus spreading to the younger population who currently cannot be vaccinated.”

Dr. Amy Dressel is a pediatrician at Glacier Pediatrics in Juneau and volunteers to administer COVID-19 vaccines. She is also one of the recent winners of the Juneau Art & Humanities Council’s 2021 Wearable Art juried competition.

Find out how to get your vaccine by going to juneau.org/vaccine or by calling 586-6000.

Juneau’s 14-day COVID-19 recap: May 17 – May 30

Over the 14-day period from May 17 to May 30, there were 24 people in Juneau who tested positive for COVID-19 (that’s up from 17 during the previous two weeks):

  • Public Health attributed 43 percent of cases to secondary transmission, 25 percent to community spread, 16 percent to out-of-state travel, and 16 percent of the cases remain under investigation.
  • 100 percent of cases were contacted for contact tracing within 24 hours of a positive test being returned.
  • Disease spread is proportionally higher among individuals under the age of 19 and less prevalent in those over the age of 60. There is case positivity among various racial groups (the category of individuals who self-identify as white is highest with 14), and more cases in females than males (57 percent/43 percent).

The community continues to see COVID-19 spread in the community with a higher proportion of cases occurring in youth under the age of 19. Three variants of concern have been identified in Juneau (B1.1.7, B.1.351, and P1).

Vaccine update:

  • 64.6 percent of the total population of Juneau has received at least 1 dose of vaccine and 58.8 percent has completed the vaccine series.
  • 89 percent of the population in Juneau age 65+ has received at least one dose of vaccine and 87 percent has completed the vaccine series.

Anyone ages 12 and up can now walk in and get a COVID-19 vaccination at the Juneau International Airport seven days a week from 12:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. This free vaccination program, administered by Capstone Clinic through the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS), is open to travelers and community members.

Anyone getting a vaccination or driving someone to get a vaccination can park in the airport’s Short-Term parking lot and receive a parking voucher. Youth ages 12-17 must be accompanied by a parent/caregiver.

Again, vaccinations at the airport are available on a walk-in basis; you can also make an appointment at alaska.covidsecureapp.com. If you don’t already have an existing account on alaska.covidsecureapp.com, sign up for one to receive an airport vaccination.

To request vaccination services for travel groups larger than 25 individuals, email [email protected] at least one week in advance of arrival to coordinate. Groups of travelers arriving together are encouraged to make appointments through alaska.covidsecureapp.com

COVID-19 testing

DHSS continues to offer COVID-19 testing for travelers through Capstone Clinic at the Juneau airport, now located on the upper level across from TSA. PCR testing is available every day from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. The CDC continues to require international travelers, including fully vaccinated U.S. citizens returning home, be tested within three days prior to their return flight home and again 3-5 days after travel along with self-monitoring for COVID-19 symptoms. In addition, the City and Borough of Juneau encourages all arriving travelers who are not fully vaccinated to get a COVID-19 test and to avoid indoor public areas or crowded settings until results are back.

Testing at the airport is free for any traveler arriving to Juneau. Pre-travel testing will be billed to insurance when applicable. Results are available in 1-3 days.

Masks required at Juneau airport

Regardless of vaccination status, everyone must wear a mask at the Juneau International Airport per the federal mask mandate.
