Juneau’s 14-day COVID-19 recap: May 17 – May 30

Over the 14-day period from May 17 to May 30, there were 24 people in Juneau who tested positive for COVID-19 (that’s up from 17 during the previous two weeks):

• Public Health attributed 43 percent of cases to secondary transmission, 25 percent to community spread, 16 percent to out-of-state travel, and 16 percent of the cases remain under investigation.
• 100 percent of cases were contacted for contact tracing within 24 hours of a positive test being returned.
• Disease spread is proportionally higher among individuals under the age of 19 and less prevalent in those over the age of 60. There is case positivity among various racial groups (the category of individuals who self-identify as white is highest with 14), and more cases in females than males (57 percent/43 percent).

The community continues to see COVID-19 spread in the community with a higher proportion of cases occurring in youth under the age of 19. Three variants of concern have been identified in Juneau (B1.1.7, B.1.351, and P1).

Vaccine update:

• 64.6 percent of the total population of Juneau has received at least 1 dose of vaccine and 58.8 percent has completed the vaccine series.
• 89 percent of the population in Juneau age 65+ has received at least one dose of vaccine and 87 percent has completed the vaccine series.
