UPDATE: Air Emergency Canceled for the Mendenhall Valley

UPDATE (11:38AM on December 21):

Air Emergency CANCELED:

Due to increasing air movement and improving air quality in the Mendenhall Valley, the City and Borough of Juneau has canceled its Air Emergency, effective immediately. The City would like to thank Valley residents affected by the Air Emergency for their cooperation, especially during the cold weather conditions.

___

Due to the current weather conditions in the Mendenhall Valley, the City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) has issued an Air Emergency effective immediately.

The area covered by this Air Emergency extends from the Airport north to the Mendenhall Glacier, west to Montana Creek, south along the east shore of Auke Lake, and includes the east half of the Mendenhall Peninsula.

What does this mean?

The Air Emergency means that all woodstove and fireplace burning in the Mendenhall Valley is prohibited except for pellet stoves, until the Air Emergency is cancelled.

Why is CBJ calling an Air Emergency?

Over the past 24 hours particulate matter has exceeded standards for air quality and is unhealthy for people with respiratory issues.  When inhaled, fine particulates from woodsmoke can lodge themselves deep into the lungs and bloodstream and significantly impact children, elders, and those with breathing difficulties.

Staff will keep monitoring the concentration throughout the night and into tomorrow.  This emergency will be canceled as soon as the levels return to healthy standards.

For an update on the status of this Air Emergency, please call 907-586-5252, option 4, or visit the CBJ Facebook page and Juneau.gov.

Firewood Available for Harvest on Pioneer Road – Permit Required

Firewood will be available for individual harvest later this week at no cost to Juneau residents with the required permit. Coeur Mining donated 200 logs to the City & Borough of Juneau (CBJ) from a recent site clearing project.

On Friday and Saturday, September 26-27, CBJ will allow permitted residents to harvest up to three (3) cords of wood each from the Pioneer Road in North Douglas. Harvest will be for personal use firewood only and the wood may not be sold, bartered, or used for commercial purposes. Permits are free and can be found on the CBJ website at bit.ly/PioneerFirewood.

Please note that the logs are uncut and are still green and cannot be used in home heating this winter. All firewood must be seasoned before use in home heating. Visit the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s Burnwise page at dec.alaska.gov/air/burnwise for more information on seasoning firewood.

The wood is available on a first-come, first-served basis. An approved permit and personal protective gear are required to harvest. Harvesters can only work at the site from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Permits will remain open until all logs are collected.

The logs are located in the first two pull-offs on the Pioneer Road near the end of North Douglas Highway. Due to be limited space to maneuver on the road, only cars and trucks (no trailers) will have access to harvest the logs. Please refer to the permit for more information.

The CBJ greatly appreciates Coeur Alaska Kensington Mining’s donation of the logs and all related shipping costs, especially as temperatures continue to drop in Juneau.

Deadline approaching: notice of foreclosure sale by sealed bid of real property (520 6th Street)

Mendenhall Valley Air Quality

During these times of cold clear weather, the City wants to remind Mendenhall Valley residents that between Oct. 1 and April 30, the CBJ’s Air Quality Monitoring Program ensures the Mendenhall Valley’s air remains healthy.  Staff members monitor air quality data and if unhealthy concentrations of fine particulates are detected, CBJ will declare an air emergency.

During an air emergency, all woodstove burning is prohibited until the emergency is cancelled.

CBJ uses several methods to notify the public about an air emergency, including radio ads, road signs, online notifications and a hotline.

The text messaging service is the newest method for Valley residents to stay informed.
