North Franklin St. closed again to vehicle traffic today

North Franklin Street will be closed to vehicle traffic again today, 4/19/2019, at the Franklin/Front intersection for continued repairs to the fire hydrant near Gunakedeit Park.

This should be the last closure needed to complete the repair. A road closure to pour the concrete roadway will take place at a later date, and the public will be notified.

The contractor will close the road at approximately 9 am today and open it back up by mid-afternoon. North Franklin Street will be open at Second Street, and vehicles exiting the Baranof parking lot will be able to turn onto North Franklin Street from First Street. Front Street traffic will not be affected. Once again, pedestrians and drivers should use extra caution moving through this area.

Thank you for your patience as the repairs are completed.

Process to demolish former Public Safety Building to start this week

Contractors for the City and Borough of Juneau plan to put up fencing around the former Public Safety Building on Whittier Street this week to begin the demolition process. Once the building is down, CBJ will install a temporary parking lot until a long-term design for the Willoughby District is established.

CBJ is working with Coogan Construction on the project, which will be done in separate phases. Work includes hazardous materials abatement, taking down the building, excavation, installing the asphalt, and striping the parking lot. During the project, fencing will block seven parking spaces along the side of the building facing the Juneau Arts & Culture Center. The alleyway between the building and Zach Gordon Youth Center will also be fenced off. As the project gets underway, CBJ will issue notifications to alert the public of other interruptions.

Built in the 1970s with a 30-year design life, the building has severe structural problems. CBJ purchased the building from the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority last year using funding from a State of Alaska grant. The temporary parking lot will have about 60 spaces. As the Willoughby District Land Use Plan gets formulated, CBJ will determine the property’s long-term use.

Update on Ferry Way construction

Construction on Ferry Way remains on schedule for substantial completion by May 15. The utiliwalk demolition is complete, the storm and sewer improvements are finished, and the curb and gutter are nearly complete.

Work on the lighting system and concrete sidewalk will begin next week, and the paving date is tentatively set for May 1.

As work progresses adjacent to the intersection with Marine Way, pedestrians traversing the work zone along Marine Way are encouraged to follow the posted pedestrian routes with caution, and utilize the channel-side sidewalk when possible.
