Paving on Douglas Highway scheduled for today, Sept. 17

Due to a weather window, City and Borough of Juneau contractor Admiralty Construction plans on paving sections of Douglas Highway today, September 17. This is part of the Douglas Highway Water Main Replacement Project. Paving operations will focus around the Cordova Street intersection, and are expected to begin at noon and continue until completed today.

Admiralty Construction plans to have two lanes of traffic open all day. During paving operations, traffic in both lanes will periodically be completely stopped for about 10 minutes. Please plan for longer than normal delays. Flaggers will be present to help keep traffic moving.

For the rest of the week, Admiralty will return to its standard operation of working 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with only one lane of traffic open, except between peak traffic hours of 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. when two lanes are open.

Due to this construction, Capital Transit service is modified. There is no outbound service to Douglas from Cordova Street; riders on Cordova can wait for the bus at the bottom of the hill. The bus stop at Breeze In has been temporarily moved closer to the roundabout. For more information, call Capital Transit at 789-6901.

Construction to relocate part of Kaxdigoowu Héen Dei starts this week

The City and Borough of Juneau is contracting with Southeast Earthmovers to relocate a portion of the Kaxdigoowu Héen Dei (Brotherhood Bridge Trail) that has fallen into the Mendenhall River. Work starts this week and will go through mid-October, with paving scheduled to take place in the spring. The new trail will be constructed across the meadow adjacent to Brotherhood Bridge parking lot. Please obey all posted signs and detours during construction.

Fall work hours are anticipated to be 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The start of the trail, as well as the ADA sidewalk that ramps down from the parking lot to the trail, will be closed to the public and barricaded during construction. During work hours, trail users are encouraged to access Kaxdigoowu Héen Dei from alternate trailheads – at the end of River Road or from Dimond Park via the pedestrian bridge. From the Brotherhood Bridge parking lot, access the rest of the trail via Wildmeadow Lane and a gravel road at the end of the lane.

During construction, a portion of the Brotherhood Bridge parking lot may be utilized by Southeast Earthmovers for materials and equipment staging. Expect other construction-related traffic and activity on Wildmeadow Lane and the gravel road during working hours. The new, rerouted trail will be open to the public in the winter.

Downtown wayfinding signage will feature local voices and stories

As part of developing a new downtown wayfinding signage system, the City and Borough of Juneau has contracted with community arts organization Ping Chong + Company to create several audio installations. The audio will feature the voices and stories of local residents that illuminate life in the Capital City. Ping Chong + Company and CBJ are hosting two information sessions on the audio installations on Thursday, August 22, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Juneau, Arts & Culture Center and Tuesday, August 27, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Downtown Library.

“If you have little-known histories and memories to share, including stories that offer a window into the unique lived experiences of Juneau’s Alaska Native, Filipino, immigrant, and LGBTQ communities, as well as people who engage in conservation, mining, fisheries, government, and religious communities, please contact us and/or come to one of the information sessions. All are welcome. The audio installations will become a permanent public art experience—a unique and powerful way to encounter diverse perspectives of Juneau,” Juneau artists Ryan Conarro & Lillian Petershoare of Ping Chong + Company wrote.

Following the information sessions, Conarro and Petershoare will host a series of story circles and interview sessions, September 10-20, where community members can share personal stories, memories, and histories. The artists will then collaborate with local musicians this winter to create the audio installations. In Spring/Summer 2020, CBJ plans to release the audio installations, which will link to the new downtown wayfinding signage system.
