Learn about Community Development Block Grants at August 18 public meeting

The CBJ Community Development Department has opened the application period for local projects to apply for the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development FY2025 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program.

CDD staff will hold a public information meeting on both programs on Monday, August 18, 2025 at 3 p.m. on Zoom. Join the meeting at https://juneau.zoom.us/j/84096419184?pwd=C7GjqdXBRVeRUSpnV0teetumKCiYyo.1.

Each year the City and Borough of Juneau is eligible to sponsor a local project for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant Program that is facilitated through Alaska CEED. CDBG competitive grants are single-purpose project grants with a maximum of $850,000 per community.

The goals of the Alaska Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) are to provide financial resources to Alaskan communities for public facilities and planning activities which address issues detrimental to the health and safety of local residents and to reduce the costs of essential community services. The program may also fund Special Economic Development activities which result in the creation of jobs for low and moderate income persons.

A timeline with key dates, the local competition application, and state application materials can be found at https://juneau.org/community-development/grants-cdbg

In 2021, AWARE was awarded CBDG funds for retaining wall construction.

Juneau Affordable Housing Fund Round 5 application opens July 21

The next round of the Juneau Affordable Housing Fund (JAHF) competitive funding program opens for applications on July 21 with $2.5 million in available funds.  As with previous rounds, round 5 of the JAHF seeks to fund projects that create affordable and middle-income housing opportunities for Juneau.

The JAHF allows for-profit developers, non-profit organizations, public and regional housing authorities, and tribal governments to apply for grants or loans to cover capital costs associated with the development of housing.

Since 2021, JAHF grants and loans have supported both new construction and rehabilitation of existing housing stock to provide needed housing for seniors, vulnerable populations, and low- and middle-income residents. Currently funded projects are projected to create 377 additional housing units and are estimated to bring over $77 million worth of investment to the community over the course of the expected project completion within the next two to three years.

Round 5 application materials and eligibility guidelines will be available on the JAHF website beginning Monday, July 21.  An informational public meeting about the application process will be held on Monday, July 28 at 3:00pm AKDT via Zoom.
