Learn about CBJ efforts to assess underutilized properties at Nov. 15 public meeting

The City and Borough of Juneau is in the process of applying for a federal grant through the Environmental Protection Agency that will be used to assess – and potentially redevelop – select underutilized properties in the community. Learn more about this during a public meeting Monday, November 15 at 10 a.m. Join the meeting online https://juneau.zoom.us/j/85751591791 or call 1-253-215-8782 or 1-669-900-6833 with webinar ID: 857 5159 1791.

CBJ’s Community Development Department (CDD) is working with Stantec Consulting Services –  a multidisciplinary team of engineers, geologists, scientists, planners, and funding specialists – to apply for a $500,000 grant through EPA’s Brownfields Program. CDD has identified three areas of Juneau to focus on for the grant application – an area in Downtown Juneau, an area in Lemon Creek, and an area near the airport.

Discussion topics include:

  • Efforts to obtain the grant from the EPA
  • Impact of identified sites on the livelihood, health and safety of the community
  • Plans to assess underutilized areas
  • Redevelopment strategy and desired project outcomes

A subdivision of a 20.49-acre lot into two lots to facilitate ownership transfer of a nonprofit wrestling center at 3221 Mendenhall Loop Road. The proposed wrestling center lot is 0.94 acres. (SMP2021 0005)

The purpose of this subdivision is to subdivide the wrestling center onto its own lot so that it can take advantage of a nonprofit property tax exemption.  A two lot subdivision would usually be approved by the Director, but there are complex lot access issues which complicate further development and elevate the decision to the Planning Commission level.  Development plans for the larger lot are not known at this time.
