CBJ Assembly Makes Appointment to the Systemic Racism Review Committee

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly, at a Special Assembly Meeting held Thursday, August 25, 2022 via Zoom Webinar, made the following appointment to the Systemic Racism Review Committee.  The Assembly appointed Ephraim Froehlich to a term beginning immediately and ending June 30, 2025.

The Assembly would like to thank those individuals who are willing to serve on a CBJ board/committee.  CBJ has a number of boards, commissions, and committees with vacant seats on a rotational basis. Planning Commission meets Tuesday, June 28, 2022. Here’s how to weigh in.

The Regular Planning Commission meets June 28, 2022, at 7 P.M. This meeting will be a hybrid meeting held both in person and via Zoom, and will be to review Conditional Use Permits for a Marijuana Retail Facility and converting 211 4th Street into 33 apartments.

Conditional Use Permit for a Marijuana Retail Store (USE2022 0007)

The applicant requests a Permit for the development of a Marijuana Retail Store in the Light Commercial zoning district. Currently, the lot has a single-family dwelling. The existing structure will remain, and a new structure will be constructed to accommodate the retail store. The applicant is required to obtain a license for a Marijuana Retail Facility from the State of Alaska Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office, and a license from the City and Borough of Juneau.

Conditional Use Permit for a 33-unit Apartment Building (USE2022 0008)

The applicant requests a Conditional Use Permit for a 33-unit multi-family development. Currently, the lot has a three-story structure containing commercial offices. The existing structure will be renovated to convert the office spaces into dwelling units. The footprint of the building will not change. The structure, known as the Assembly Building, was constructed in 1934. In 1973, the building was converted into commercial offices.

Conditional Use Permit for a 45,000 square foot Medical Office Building (USE2022 0006)

The applicant is requesting a Conditional Use Permit to develop a 45,000 square foot, three-story, medical office building in a Light Commercial zoning district. The proposed development is on Vintage Boulevard just north of Safeway, south of the Mendenhall Valley Post Office, and within 500 feet of Trillium Landing, Riverview Senior Community, and retail. The project site is within walking distance to transit, including the new Valley Transit Center. The project is an outpatient medical office building with services including primary and urgent care, pediatrics, lab, imaging, behavioral health, optometry, and dental care.

Amendment to Seawalk (AME2022 0004)

In 2021, the Assembly repealed CBJ 49.70 Coastal Management. (Ord. 2021-13). The Assembly directed the Planning Commission to review the repealed code and make recommendations on sections that should be reestablished. On May 26, 2022, the Title 49 Subcommittee voted to recommend moving a portion of the repealed CBJ Section, 49.70.960(c)(6), the Seawalk ordinance, without revisions to a new CBJ Section in 49.35 Public and Private Improvements and requests favorable recommendation to the Assembly.
