Parks & Recreation Offering $1,500 – $5,000 Signing Bonuses for Critical Positions

July 5, 2023 – News

Effective immediately, the City & Borough of Juneau Parks & Recreation Department is offering hiring bonuses ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 for critical hard-to-fill positions at Juneau Pools, Zach Gordon Youth Center, and Shéiyi Xaat Hít / Spruce Root House Youth Shelter.

Staffing challenges continue to impact communities nationwide, and Juneau is no exception. Many of these positions have gone unfilled for months, leading to increased overtime costs, reduced or cancelled programming, unexpected facilities closures, and high staff turnover.

“We want to provide the community with the full range of programming and services that they expect, from swim lessons to youth support services,” said Parks & Recreation Director George Schaaf. “To do that, we need to be fully staffed. We hope that hiring bonuses will encourage job seekers to give Parks & Recreation a second look and send candidates a message that we want them to be part of our team.”

Eligible positions currently include:

Additional positions will be posted soon.

Employees must meet certain conditions to receive the full bonus, such as successful completion of a probation period or a designated length of service. See job listings for details.

The City and Borough of Juneau offers competitive pay and a package of benefits including four weeks of paid time off; medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; participation in the State of Alaska PERS retirement system; and an employer contribution to dependent care costs after the first year of employment.
