Only a few spots left in CCFR Cadet Program for high school students

August 29, 2019 – FYI, News

Capital City Fire/Rescue has a few spots remaining in its Cadet Program geared for high school students and is currently accepting applications. Cadets meet approximately twice a month for hands-on training from local experts in the field. Learn more about the program during an Open House on Saturday, September 7, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hagevig Regional Fire Training Center on Sherwood Lane. Cadets and firefighters will be on hand to explain the program, demonstrate skills, and give tours of the facility. Light refreshments will be served.

During the yearlong Cadet Program, students learn the skills necessary to be a firefighter, including fire behavior, dragging hose, making a rescue, and EMS. The program simulates real conditions while maintaining an appropriate margin of safety. Cadets also learn about teamwork, leadership, and self-reliance. The main function of the program, though, is instilling a sense of community service.

“We’ve had several cadets go on to pursue firefighting in college or as a career, but that’s not the goal of the program. Our main focus is teaching the students about service to the community. We want our cadets to grow up giving back,” Assistant Chief Chad Cameron said.

Students must be between 14- and 18-years-old to apply for the Cadet Program. Applications can be picked up at the Downtown Fire Hall during business hours 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. or emailed.
