Mendenhall River flooding update: weekend clean-up and assistance information

August 16, 2024 – News

With clean-up still underway for many households, debris collection crews will be out on the streets all day Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile, although Disaster Assistance Centers are winding down, in-person help is still available—see all the details below.

Last but not least, make sure to look after yourself while you’re out working during the hot and sunny weather this weekend. Hydrate, wear sunscreen, and take frequent breaks in the shade whenever possible.

Debris Removal Continues Through Weekend

CBJ and DOT crews are continuing to collect flood-related waste and debris from the right-of-way and will be out on the streets from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

If you’re just starting to tackle some big tasks, you’ve still got plenty of time—CBJ will continue to make pick-ups throughout the clean-up effort.

State and Red Cross Help Available In Person

The State of Alaska Disaster Assistance Centers wrap up operations today, Friday, August 16 at 6 p.m. Don’t worry if you couldn’t make it to the center or if you have new questions about applying for Individual Assistance—help is still available in person. Please call (907) 632-2165 to find a time to meet with helpers from Alaska DHS&EM.

The American Red Cross is also continuing to provide immediate financial assistance for those who need help recovering and whose primary residences were destroyed or sustained eligible damage. (More information in this handout.) Please call (907) 646-5467 to make an appointment at the Red Cross assistance center.

Volunteer Center Open Saturday & Sunday

The Melvin Park volunteer center will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. At this time, we have made major progress tackling the most urgent drying and mucking out needs. Over the weekend, the center will focus on dispatching trained volunteers to homes still in need of help.

We also appreciate the extra support from Team Rubicon volunteers who have traveled to Juneau for the week—thank you for lending a hand to some of the toughest clean-up challenges.

If you are in need of volunteer assistance, please reach out at bit.ly/juneau-flood.

An additional note—as of Friday, the Salvation Army Canteen has concluded operations in Melvin Park. If you are in need of meal support, contact Petr Janousek at [email protected].

Request Property Tax Relief

If your home or property was damaged in the flooding, you are encouraged to request partial property tax relief from the CBJ Assessor’s Office.

The Assessor’s Office will provide more information and guidance in the coming days, but property owners who are ready to take next steps now are welcome to fill out the Disaster Relief form and return it, along with photos of damage, by email to [email protected] or by postal mail to 155 Heritage Way, Juneau, Alaska 99801.

Don’t worry if you’re not ready to start a new task yet—you have plenty of time to take care of this later. Just be sure to keep an eye out for more information in the future.

If you have questions, you can email [email protected] or call (907) 586-5215 ext 4033.
