Landslide on Gastineau Avenue

September 26, 2022 – News

Today, Monday, September 26, a landslide occurred in the area above 187 Gastineau Avenue at approximately 6:20 PM. Capital City Fire Rescue, the Juneau Police Department, and the City and Borough of Juneau are currently on the scene coordinating the response.

The landslide damaged two homes in the area and displaced some homeowners; no injuries have been identified at this time. Streets are closed surrounding the slide area and residents in the area have been asked to evacuate. The response team asks that the public do not come within a block of the slide area to ensure public safety and allow for a swift and smooth response.

The landslide has had a significant impact on streets and power lines. A large amount of debris is in the streets and power remains out to customers in parts of downtown Juneau. Street crews will clear the area tomorrow morning with the onset of daylight conditions. When enough debris has been cleared, AEL&P will work to restore power to customers in the area.

The Red Cross is supporting residents impacted by the landslide and the surrounding evacuation order. Those in need of services should contact Taylor Sausen at (907) 406-0962.

We expect additional rain over the next 18 hours and ask that residents stay alert to the latest weather conditions and emergency announcements.

Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
