Grand Opening of Project Playground September 29

September 20, 2018 – FYI, News

It’s the day the community has been waiting for: Project Playground at Twin Lakes officially opens Saturday, September 29 at noon. The City and Borough of Juneau Parks & Recreation Department and the Project Playground Steering Committee are celebrating with a fun-filled, family-friendly event from noon to 5 p.m. as a way to say thank you to the community.

The noon celebration will kick off with short speeches by Parks & Recreation Director George Schaaf, Deputy City Manager Mila Cosgrove, Project Playground Steering Committee Chair Mike Goldstein, and Mayor Ken Koelsch. The celebration will feature playground time starting around 12:45 p.m., cake around 2:30 p.m., as well as food vendors and activities throughout the event.

Parking will be available in the Twin Lakes parking lot; overflow parking can be accessed along Glacier Highway and the Juneau Public Health Center across the street. When using overflow parking, please be cautious crossing the street and be aware of traffic flow.

The original Project Playground burned down April 24, 2017. Since then, the community has come together to help rebuild it through donated time, funding, and resources. CBJ insurance and risk management funds paid to rebuild the playground similar to what it was before. New playground components were paid for by donations collected and managed by the Steering Committee, Juneau Community Foundation, and Southeast Alaska Independent Living. The rebuilt playground will be safer and more accessible.

CBJ would like to thank the Project Playground Steering Committee, build captains, volunteers, donors, Juneau Community Foundation, SAIL, design team (Corvus Design, PDC Engineers, PND Engineers, Leathers & Associates, Morris Engineering), construction inspector Wilson Engineering, contractors (Carver Construction, Chatham Electric, Vanpool Painting), and cleanup team (GR Cheeseman Construction, Cox Environmental Services and Dahlberg Design).
