Filing Period for Assembly and School Board Seats Closes Monday, July 24

The filing period for candidates wishing to run for Assembly and Board of Education (School Board) seats in the City & Borough of Juneau 2023 municipal election will close at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023.

A list of certified candidates is regularly updated and available on the CBJ elections page.

This year voters will elect four Assemblymembers and two School Board members in the October 3 Regular Municipal Election:

Two (2) Areawide Assembly seats – one 3 year term, one 2 year term remainder
One (1) District One Assembly seat – 3 year term
One (1) District Two Assembly seat – 3 year term
Two (2) Board of Education (School Board) seats – each 3 year terms

Candidates for office must be qualified voters of the City and Borough of Juneau and meet the following criteria:

  1. Qualified to vote in State elections;
  2. A resident of the municipality for at least thirty days immediately preceding the election;
  3. Registered to vote in state elections at a residence address within the municipality at least thirty days before the municipal election at which the person seeks to vote; and
  4. Not disqualified under Article V of the Alaska Constitution.

In addition, candidates for Assembly must be a resident of CBJ for at least one year immediately preceding election to office. Candidates for Assembly District 1 and District 2 seats must reside in the district from which elected at the time of their election. View the Assembly District map online.

Declaration of Candidacy and Nominating Petition forms must be submitted to the Clerk in their original paper form (with original signatures and notarized); the Public Official Financial Disclosure form must be filed electronically on APOC’s website and a signed printed copy submitted to the Clerk. The Clerk’s Office cannot certify a candidate’s nominating petition without these three paper documents filed in the Clerk’s Office by the close of the filing period on Monday, July 24 at 4:30 p.m.

Anyone who decides to run after 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 24 must file as a write-in candidate and their name will not be printed on the ballot.
