Docks & Harbors looking for ideas on how to dispose abandoned tug Lumberman

April 4, 2019 – News

The City and Borough of Juneau Docks & Harbors Department is weighing its options on how to potentially remove the derelict marine vessel Lumberman from Gastineau Channel. Docks & Harbors has put out a Request for Information/Statement of Interest to solicit ideas on the most cost effective solution to address it. The deadline to submit is Friday, May 3 prior to 2 p.m.

The Lumberman has been anchored in Gastineau Channel near Eagle Creek for about a year. Prior to that, it was located off the Aurora Harbor breakwater. Over the past several months, Docks & Harbors, with assistance from others, has replaced the anchor, dewatered the vessel, communicated with the Alaska Attorney General on how to deal with it, and placed a tracking device for the Marine Exchange of Alaska to monitor its movement. Though CBJ does not have a legal requirement to remove the abandoned tug, CBJ is concerned that delaying the removal may expose greater expenses to a government agency to remediate in the future.

Docks & Harbors will hold a pre-submission meeting on April 18 at 10 a.m. in City Hall Conference Room 224 for marine professionals and salvage companies to ask questions pertaining to the Request for Information/Statement of Interest.
