Construction on Capital School Park Improvements starts Wednesday, Aug. 25

August 24, 2021 – News

Work on the City and Borough of Juneau’s Capital School Park Improvements Project begins Wednesday, August 25. During the remaining construction season, CBJ contractor Admiralty Construction will begin demolition in the play areas and plans to construct a new concrete retaining wall.

Beginning Wednesday, August 25, access to the park will be from the Franklin Street and 5th Street sides only. Some areas of the play field will remain open along with the benches and picnic tables by the Empty Chair Memorial. The playground, basketball court, upper sloped areas, and the park’s two off-street parking spaces will be closed to public access.

The public is asked to use caution in the area, and observe construction and traffic signage.

Some areas of the park will be re-opened in the winter for use including the field and the sledding hill. Further Capital School Park improvements work is scheduled to take place beginning Spring 2022 through the planned completion in August 2022. The project includes new ADA accessible playground equipment, drainage system, safety surfacing, concrete paths through the park, safety lighting, fencing, entry porticos, a picnic area, an artificial turf field, art, landscaping, and an upper paved walkway with views over Juneau.
