Changes to testing requirements for travelers to Juneau from outside of Alaska

March 2, 2021 – News

The Juneau Assembly passed an emergency ordinance last night that changes testing requirements for travelers to Juneau from outside of Alaska. The changes take away the $250 fee for nonresident testing and exempt fully vaccinated individuals from strict social distancing after testing. Fully vaccinated is defined as: More than two weeks have passed since receiving the second dose of a two-dose vaccine or since receiving one dose of a single-dose vaccine. With these changes, here is what travelers to Juneau from outside of Alaska are required to do:

STEP 1 – All travelers (fully vaccinated and not fully vaccinated) arriving from out-of-state must register on the State of Alaska Travel Portal at alaska.covidsecureapp.com

STEP 2 (for not fully vaccinated) – All travelers who are not fully vaccinated arriving from out-of-state must adhere to one of the following:

  • If you have proof of a qualifying negative COVID-19 test, you must strict social distance for 5 days.
  • If you are awaiting results from a test taken within 72 hours of departure, you must strict social distance for 5 days, and continue to strict social distance if test results have not been received after 5 days.
  • If you didn’t take a pre-travel test, you must:
    • Take a free COVID-19 test upon arriving at the Juneau International Airport and strict social distance for 5 days
    • OR Self-quarantine for 14 days (Only Alaska residents have this option)
  • If you’re an Alaska resident and have been out-of-state for less than 72 hours, you must self-monitor for any symptoms, even mild ones, for 14 days after arrival. It is also recommended, but not required, that you test upon arriving at the Juneau International Airport and strict social distance for 5 days

STEP 2 (for fully vaccinated) – All travelers who are fully vaccinated arriving from out-of-state must adhere to one of the following:

  • Show proof of a qualifying negative COVID-19 test
  • Show proof of having taken a test within 72 hours of departure
  • Take a free COVID-19 test upon arriving at the Juneau International Airport
  • Self-quarantine for 14 days (Only Alaska residents have this option)
  • If you’re an Alaska resident and have been out-of-state for less than 72 hours, you must self-monitor for any symptoms, even mild ones, for 14 days after arrival. It is also recommended (but not required) that you test upon arriving at the Juneau International Airport

STEP 3 – It is recommended, but not required, that all travelers (fully vaccinated and not fully vaccinated) take a follow-up test 5-14 days after arrival. If you opt to do this, you must:

  • Sign in on the State of Alaska Travel Portal at alaska.covidsecureapp.com and choose the “Generate travel voucher” tab
  • Return to the Juneau International Airport 5-14 days after arrival between 8 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. for a second test
