Downtown Waterfront deckover project begins next week
Work to deck-over approximately three-quarter-acre of what’s now open tidelands is scheduled to begin next week. The City and Borough of Juneau is contracting with Trucano Construction to build the deckover adjacent to the Archipelago Lot, located between the Marine Parking Garage and Pier 49. This will open up the current Seawalk and create more open space.
Construction will continue throughout the fall and winter, and is expected to last a year. Work will focus on earth moving and pile driving to construct the deckover, as well as a bus staging area. The construction project cost is $12.4 million with funding coming from the Dock Fund, Port Development Fees, Commercial Passenger Vessel Excise Tax, and Marine Passenger Fees.
After CBJ’s work is completed, private company Archipelago Properties/Morris Communications will continue its construction before the area is opened to the public in May 2021.
