Bartlett Board of Directors to interview three finalists for Chief Executive Officer

Following a nationwide search, the Bartlett Regional Hospital CEO search committee has narrowed the pool of candidates for the CEO position to three finalists. The finalists will be in Juneau starting on August 26 – September 7, 2024, to conduct their final interview, complete an assessment exercise, and interact with hospital and medical staff, CBJ leadership, and the public.
The finalists are (in alphabetical order):
Jon Friedenberg
Mr. Friedenberg (‘free-den-berg’) is currently a healthcare consultant with Friedenberg Healthcare Consulting. His previous healthcare leadership experience includes serving as President and COO of MarinHealth Medical Center in Greenbrae, California and as Vice President of El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, California. He also served as CEO of Mary Crowley Cancer Research in Dallas, Texas. Mr. Friedenberg holds a Master of Arts from the University of California, Davis and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley.
Melanee Tiura
Ms. Tiura (‘tee-yur-ah’) is currently the Administrator of Providence Valdez Medical Center. Her previous leadership experience includes serving as the CEO of Iliuliuk Family and Health Services in Unalaska. She previously worked at UP Health System – Portage in Hancock, Michigan as the Director of Physician Services and at Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation in Dillingham, Alaska as the Community Health Services Division Manager. Ms. Tiura holds a Doctor of Health Administration from Central Michigan University, a Master of Science in Human Nutrition from Eastern Michigan University, and a Bachelor of Science in Administrative and Clinical Dietetics from Northern Michigan University.
Joe Wanner
Mr. Wanner (‘waa-ner’) is currently the Chief Financial Officer for Bartlett Regional Hospital. His previous leadership experience includes serving as the CFO/COO at Wallowa County Health Care District in Enterprise, Oregon. He previously worked at Bartlett starting in 2011 as the Controller and then the CFO. Mr. Wanner holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Eastern Washington University.
A CEO search committee made up of representatives from the Board, CBJ, hospital stakeholders, and the public was appointed by the Board to interview candidates. 58 applications were received and vetted by a hospital screening committee. The CEO search committee held virtual interviews with 15 candidates and selected three finalists.
The public is invited to meet each candidate in person and provide feedback to the Board. Candidate meet and greets will be held on the hospital campus in the main hospital gallery at 3260 Hospital Drive.

The Board will hold a special board meeting the following morning after each CEO finalist’s day on campus to conduct their final interview. Interviews will begin at 8:00 a.m. in open public session and will take place in the boardroom on the hospital campus and be streamed over Zoom (view schedule). Approximately halfway through each interview, the Board will recess into executive session for the remainder of the interview. Following the final interview on September 7, the Board will recess into executive session for deliberations.
An announcement of the new CEO will occur once an offer has been made and accepted.
Ian Worden will continue serving as interim CEO through December 2024 to allow for overlap and ensure a smooth transition.
