Discussion: | The National Weather Service Forecasts- ...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FROM 10 AM THIS MORNING TO 6 PM AKST THIS EVENING... TODAY...BECOMING WINDY. SNOW...MIXING WITH RAIN IN THE AFTERNOON OVER SOUTHERN AREAS. SNOW ACCUMULATION 1 TO 5 INCHES. HIGHEST AMOUNTS NORTH OF MENDENHALL VALLEY. HIGHS AROUND 32. EAST WIND 10 TO 20 MPH INCREASING TO 15 TO 25 MPH LATE IN THE AFTERNOON WITH GUSTS TO 40 MPH .TONIGHT...WINDY. SNOW IN THE EVENING...THEN RAIN LATE. With the great volumes on new snow over the last few days avalanche danger is high at this time. Natural avalanches are likely to occur. Thane road avalanched in the last 24 hours. Berhands and the white path have not slid yet. There is a prominent weak layer in place that is triggering easily in test pits. With additional precip, wind, and warming in the forecast avalanche danger will continue to increase over ther next 24+ hours. Slides are just getting to the point of being large enough to be a consideration in the urban environment. While slides are not yet predicted to be large enough to effect homes using extreme caution is advised. Please avoid the flume trail. Please do not walk in the gated areas above the Berhands neighborhood. Use caution in any avalanche terrain at this time! |
