Cold weather is on the way — take these steps to keep pipes from freezing

With freezing temperatures forecast in the coming days, now is a critical time to take important preventive steps to keep your water pipes from freezing. Water pipes that are not properly insulated or maintained are at risk of freezing and/or bursting—an event that could leave you without running water as well as cause flooding and damage to your home or business.

To prevent frozen water pipes, the City and Borough of Juneau recommends the following preventive measures:

  • Leave a pencil-thin trickle of water running in the sink to keep water circulating
  • Ensure crawl space vents are closed
  • Ensure pipes are properly insulated
  • Ensure heat tapes are plugged in and functioning
  • Turn off hose bibs, disconnect any hoses, and ensure they are properly insulated

In the event that you do experience frozen pipes, contact a plumber or contractor. CBJ does not have the ability to thaw frozen water pipes.

The Emergency Water Turn-Off contact is (907) 586-0393 Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or (907) 586-2165 after hours.

Safe Streets 4 All roadway study seeks your input online and at open houses

The City and Borough of Juneau invites all community members to participate in our comprehensive roadway study and safety action plan. We would like to hear about your experiences on Juneau roads, and where we can provide the most impactful solutions to high priority areas.

CBJ has generously been awarded a Safe Streets 4 All (SS4A) planning grant by the U.S. Federal Highways Administration. The purpose of the SS4A grant is to improve roadway safety by reducing or eliminating roadway fatalities and serious injuries through developing a safety action plan focused on all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation users, motorists, personal conveyance and micro mobility users, and commercial vehicle operators.

With the help of our friends at Kinney Engineering and RESPEC, we have developed multiple ways for you to get involved! Please visit our website at bit.ly/CBJSafeStreets to find more information on the grant program, take our roadway survey, and make some additions to our interactive map.

We are also hosting three open houses in February. Each will offer the opportunity to hear a brief presentation, speak with the Study and Action Plan team, and see some of our early findings. Please join us at one or all the upcoming dates:

  • Tuesday, February 4, Mendenhall Public Library Large Meeting Room, 5-7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, February 5, Dzantik’I Heeni School Commons, 5-7 p.m.
  • Thursday, February 6, Downtown Public Library Large Meeting Room, 5-7 p.m.

We look forward to hearing from you!

ZGYC launches new after-school programs in Cedar Park & Geneva Woods starting February

Zach Gordon Youth Center is very excited to announce the launch of two new neighborhood after-school programs, starting February in Cedar Park and Geneva Woods. The programs will offer free, on-site programming for children and youth ages 6-12, meeting children and families in the neighborhoods where they live to provide a safe, fun, and supportive environment after school.

“Providing afterschool programming at Cedar Park and Geneva Woods feels like a natural expansion of our services,” said ZGYC Manager Jorden Nigro. “Our mission to connect youth and engage community is one that involves meeting folks where they’re at and with this program we will be able to do that quite literally. We are thrilled to have this opportunity to be a part of the day to day in these neighborhoods and grateful to AHFC for inviting us in.”

At each program location, children can get help with homework, have healthy snacks, and join activities such as cooking, arts & crafts, games, field trips, and more. Older siblings age 13-14 are welcome and encouraged to join as helpers and mentors, and programs will host monthly family nights.

These programs are made possible by funding from the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation.

Programming in both neighborhoods will be offered from 2:30 – 5:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Cedar Park program will meet at Cedar Park Apartments Unit 2A, and the Geneva Woods program will meet at the Geneva Woods Community Center.

The programs kick off on Monday, February 3. Families are invited to learn more at open house gatherings:

  • Geneva Woods: Community Center, Wednesday, January 29, 5-7 p.m.
  • Cedar Park: Unit 2A, Thursday, January 30, 5-7 p.m.

For questions about the Cedar Park program, contact Sophia Helge at [email protected] or (907) 419-9152.

For questions about the Geneva Woods program, contact Rachel Puckett at [email protected] or (907) 419-9152.
