Dispose unwanted prescription drugs at JPD this Sat. April 24 for National Drug Take Back Day

The Juneau Police Department will be hosting a drop-off location on April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. During that time, the public can drop off potentially dangerous prescription medications at the Juneau Police Department (6255 Alaway Avenue) for disposal.

Types of medications that can be collected are tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes and other sharps, and illegal drugs will not be accepted. Vaping devices and cartridges may be accepted at the drop-off location provided lithium batteries are removed.

At its last Take Back Day in October, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) collected a record-high amount of expired, unwanted, and unused prescription medications, with the public turning in close to 500 tons of unwanted drugs across the count. Over the 10-year span of Take Back Day, DEA has brought in more than 6,800 tons of prescription drugs. With studies indicating a majority of abused prescription drugs come from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets, clearing out unused medicine is essential. Helping people dispose of potentially harmful prescription drugs is just one way DEA is working to reduce addiction and stem overdose deaths.

JPD: Juneau residents see increase in Social Security phishing attempts, spam calls

In the last few days, the Juneau Police Department has heard from many people stating they had received suspicious calls from someone claiming to be with the Social Security Administration. Some of these calls contained very alarming statements. Some call recipients were told their Social Security number was implicated in serious crimes including murder and drug trafficking or that vehicles registered to them have been found with drugs in them. These calls are phishing calls intended to intimidate the recipient into providing information the perpetrators will then use to commit fraud.

The people making the calls spoof phone numbers to make it look like they’re calling from local numbers even though they are not. For the safety of your information, we recommend you never provide personal information unless you know with certainty you are talking to a trusted entity. Most government and banking entities will not initiate contact by phone. If you receive suspicious calls, we recommend you hang up without providing ANY information. After hanging up, you can call the named organization at their PUBLISHED phone number if you think it might be a real call.

The Social Security Administration has tips on their website about what to do if you receive calls from someone claiming there’s a problem with Social Security number or account. SSA recommends reporting questionable calls to their Office of the Inspector General. If you suffered a financial loss as a result of the call, please also report that to JPD at juneaupolice.com.

Interested in a career in law enforcement? JPD officer written test can now be done remotely.

The Juneau Police Department is currently recruiting for several police officer positions. For individuals new to law enforcement, initial testing (also known as Phase I) involves a written test, a physical ability test, and an interview. Interested applicants now have the option of taking the written exam at home, the physical ability test individually or self-tested, and the interview via Zoom. Alternatively, traditional in-person testing will be held February 25-26 in Juneau.

For either testing option:

  • Sign up through Public Safety Testing. It costs $50.
  • Once the written exam is successfully completed, applicants will be provided instructions on how to complete the next steps. Each step is contingent on passing the previous step.

No matter how an applicant decides to complete the written test and physical ability test, it is recommended that individuals study for the multi-hour written test and practice for the fitness test. The physical ability test involves a 300-meter sprint, vertical jump, push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5 mile run.

Once applicants pass Phase I, they receive a conditional job offer and begin Phase II, which consists of a background investigation, a polygraph, and a psychological exam. If successful with Phase II, applicants are given a final job offer contingent on passing the final phase, which consists of a medical exam and a drug screening.

JPD Police Officers are fully benefited positions. The starting salary range is $68,494 to $73,382. The City and Borough of Juneau offers a competitive salary package that includes the opportunity for regular wage increases, a health insurance program, leave, and retirement credit through the Public Employees’ Retirement System.

For more information on the testing process, contact Patti Rumfelt at [email protected], call 586-0600 Option 4, or visit JoinJPD.com.
