UPDATED: Daytime Closure to Basin Road Trestle Beginning May 31

UPDATE: Daytime pedestrian access to Basin Road Trestle Bridge has been extended through Wednesday, May 31.

The Basin Road Trestle Bridge will be closed to all traffic including pedestrians between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., seven days a week, from June 1 to June 11 due to structural repair work.

Pedestrian traffic will be allowed during off-work hours with a temporary foot bridge spanning the work zone. There may be periods of full-time closure if work and impacts to structural conditions require it.

During working hours, the Perseverance Trail system will primarily be available on the Flume Trail, accessible from Evergreen Avenue. Be advised that hiking out of the trail system via Basin Road may not be accessible. Please plan your recreational activities accordingly and travel safely.

The Trestle Bridge will remain open to uninterrupted pedestrian traffic only through May 25.

Tongass Boulevard Reconstruction Phase II Begins May 15

Construction on Phase II of the Tongass Boulevard Reconstruction Project will begin Monday, May 15, and continue throughout the summer. The project is expected to be complete by October 1, 2023.

Phase II of this project includes reconstruction of Tongass Boulevard from Dudley Street to Mendenhall Loop Road. Work includes excavation and replacement of the roadbed; removal and replacement of water, sewer and storm drain utilities and services; new pavement, sidewalks, curb and gutter; and other miscellaneous related work.

Construction will begin at the intersection of Tongass Boulevard & Dudley Street before moving onward throughout the project area. The intersection will be closed for approximately one month beginning Monday.

Local traffic, access to residences, and on-street parking will be impacted while this project is underway. Please expect scheduled one-way traffic, delays, and detours during construction. Pedestrian access will be maintained along one side of the street at all times.

Please walk and drive with caution and obey all traffic signs and safety guidance.

Assembly To Hold Juneau North Douglas Crossing Listening Session on May 18

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly Public Works and Facilities Committee will hold a listening session on Thursday, May 18 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. to hear from the public about the Juneau Douglas North Crossing route alternatives that have made it through Level 1 screening. The session will be held in person in the Assembly Chambers and remotely via Zoom.

This public meeting is independent of the Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) study and is an opportunity for Juneau residents to share their thoughts on the project directly with their local elected officials.

The proposed route alternatives have been refined to the following list:

  • Mendenhall Peninsula
  • West Sunny Point Area
  • Sunny Point Area
  • Vanderbilt
  • Twin Lakes
  • Salmon Creek

The Level 1 Screening memo, which details the screening criteria process and how the alternatives were vetted, can be found on the project website at www.jdnorthcrossing.com. Basin Road Trestle Remains Open To Pedestrian Traffic Only

The Basin Road Trestle remains open to pedestrian traffic only due to structural damage from the January rock fall event.  The Trestle is closed to vehicular traffic until structural repairs can be made.

Once construction work begins, the Trestle will be closed to pedestrian traffic during the contractor’s working hours to ensure maximum safety. It will be reopened outside those hours. There may be periods of full-time closure if work and impacts to structural conditions require it.

Advance notifications of closures and the contractor’s work schedule will be provided to make sure the public is informed of any changes to Trestle access.

The structural repair work is expected to be complete by mid-June, barring no material supply issues.

The Juneau Commission on Sustainability (JCOS) regular meeting originally scheduled for April 5 has been rescheduled to Thursday, March 30 at 12:00 p.m. via Zoom.
