Revised Traffic Pattern on Calhoun Avenue August 5-6

The Calhoun Avenue & W. 7th Street intersection will be closed to vehicle traffic beginning Saturday, August 5 through Sunday, August 6.

During this closure, Indian Street and portions of W. 7th Street and W. 8th Street will be temporarily opened to two-way traffic. See the attached map for details of the revised traffic pattern. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project zone, including the Willoughby stairs and overpass.

Phase II of the Calhoun Avenue Reconstruction Project is nearing completion and this closure will allow the contractor to prepare for and carry out paving operations. Please note that there will be significant construction traffic and work in the area on Sunday.

Please obey all construction signage and stay alert while in the area to ensure the safety of yourself and others.

Bartlett Regional Hospital Parking Survey Open Through August 11

Have you recently visited the Bartlett Regional Hospital campus, including Wildflower Court? CBJ Engineering & Public Works is currently exploring parking and access improvements to the Bartlett Regional Hospital and Wildflower Court campus and wants to hear from you. Whether you’re a patient, employee, caregiver, or visitor, you are invited to complete a brief online survey about parking options at BRH, including capacity, price, location, and ideas for improvements. The survey is open through Friday, August 11, 2023.

An initial survey was conducted in spring 2023, and this follow-up survey builds on those responses. Whether or not you took the previous survey, you are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to share information on parking experiences and give feedback on proposals to improve access to the BRH campus.

Take the survey online now through August 11.

For more information about the project, contact CBJ Project Manager Jason Hoffbauer at jason.hoffbauer@juneau.gov or (907) 586-0800 ext. 4191.

Seward Street Stairway Repairs Begin This Week

The City and Borough of Juneau and Admiralty Construction will begin repairs to the Seward Street Stairs between 5th and 6th Streets late this week.

Parts of the stairway may be impassable at times, though work will progress in sections to retain access to residences along the stairway from one direction, either toward 5th Street or toward 6th Street.  Through traffic should avoid using the stairway during construction and consider alternative routes including Franklin Street or Main Street. Repair work is expected to be complete in 2 to 4 weeks.

For more information please contact CBJ Project Manager Michael Eich at 907-586-0800 ext. 4192 or [email protected].

Update on Calhoun Avenue Phase II Reconstruction

Construction work continues on Calhoun Avenue. CBJ contractor Admiralty Construction is currently demolishing the top inches of the aging structural sidewalk near the Governor’s House end of the project. This task will continue for approximately two more weeks, and the finished product will be a new surface on the sidewalk.

Unfortunately, this work is loud, dirty, and labor-intensive. We understand this phase of the project is an inconvenience to residents of the surrounding neighborhood. However, these sorely needed upgrades—and the work they require—are critical to maintain our shared public infrastructure and keep the area safe, usable, and long-lasting for pedestrians and vehicles alike.

Work is still expected to be completed in early August. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this challenging project.
