Election Workers Wanted!

In 2021, we are again partnering with the Municipality of Anchorage to conduct this year’s October 5, 2021 Regular Municipal Election and it will still require the work of some dedicated Juneau citizens to make this work. We are hoping to find some civic minded, hard working election workers to once again assist Juneau voters in conducting this year’s election. During the next week(s), we are hiring/re-hiring election workers for a wide variety of tasks. Some of the positions include:

  • Election Call Center Workers
  • Vote Center Workers
  • Ballot Drop Box Teams
  • On-Call Election Workers
  • Canvass Review Board Workers

There may be times when one or more of the above workers are not able to work during the assigned shift and/or other duties may arise during the election period which will require the use of an on-call election worker. Dates, times, and duration of work will vary depending on need. On-call workers may be asked to deliver and/or pick up ballots and election supplies from one vote center to another, ballot drop boxes, or other locations and will need to be licensed drivers and have reliable transportation for which they will be reimbursed for mileage. Some public interaction may be required and will require adherence to public health protocols.

Election Worker Qualifications

  • registered to vote in Alaska;
  • enjoy interaction with the public;
  • perform duties in a neutral/non-partisan fashion; and
  • comply with all CBJ election laws, policies, and procedures and maintain the confidentially of voter information in accordance with the State of Alaska Division of Election rules and regulations.

An election worker should not work or volunteer on the campaign of a candidate or an ballot initiative that may appear on the municipal ballot.  In addition, an election worker cannot have a familial relationship with a candidate on the municipal ballot (or any write in candiates). A familial relationship includes:

  • mother, mother-in-law, stepmother;
  • father, father-in-law, stepfather;
  • sister, sister-in-law, stepsister;
  • brother, brother-in-law, stepbrother;
  • spouse; or
  • person sharing the same living quarters.

Anyone interested in applying for any of our election positions, is encouraged to contact Municipal Clerk Beth McEwen at 907-586-5278 or send an email to [email protected].  Pay for election workers varies depending on the particular job and duties involved. Interested individuals will be asked to submit an updated CBJ job application available on our website at https://juneau.org/human-resources/employment-opportunities.

Public invited to comment during Aug. 23 Assembly meeting on funding vote-by-mail facility in Juneau

The public will have an opportunity to weigh in on a vote-by-mail proposal during the Monday, August 23 Juneau Assembly meeting. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Join online at https://juneau.zoom.us/j/91515424903 or call 1-253-215-8782 with Webinar ID: 915 1542 4903. The proposal is to renovate an existing City and Borough of Juneau facility – the Thane Warehouse – and purchase equipment to allow for locally hosted vote-by-mail municipal elections. Read the full agenda packet here.

Within the August 23 Assembly agenda is the introduction of Ordinance 2021-08(b)(am)(D), which would appropriate $700,000 of general funds to configure the Thane Warehouse as a ballot processing center, and fund the purchase and set up of election equipment to operate a locally hosted vote-by-mail election. The work is anticipated to be complete in time to conduct the 2022 municipal election at the new Juneau processing center. Last year and this year, the CBJ municipal vote-by-mail election has and will be hosted at the Municipality of Anchorage facility.

Again, the community is invited to submit public comment during Monday’s Assembly meeting. Community members can comment during the meeting in person (up to eight people will be allowed in the audience seats at City Hall), or through Zoom online (hit the ‘raise hand’ button), or over the phone (press *9 on your phone). Members of the public are also encouraged to email their comments in advance of the meeting to [email protected].

The public will have another opportunity to weigh in during the ordinance’s public hearing, happening at a later date.

For more information, contact City Manager Rorie Watt at [email protected].
