How to Run for Local Office Workshop

In 2023, the workshop will be held on Saturday, June 24, in CBJ Assembly Chambers. The session runs from 8:45 am – 1:30pm. Pre-registration is recommended and required if you want a hard copy of the hand outs. Register online at: https://tinyurl.com/2p95d7f6

If you think you might run for office – or might work for someone who is – our annual FREE Workshop on How to Run for Local Office provides you with everything you need to know about running for Mayor, Assembly or School Board, or serving on a CBJ Board or Commission. The 2023 Workshop is back to being in-person and registration is recommended. If you have questions, email [email protected]

At the workshop potential candidates, their campaign helpers, or others who may only be thinking about running in the future, learn all about what the jobs entail, deciding and preparing to run, how to get elected, and what happens if/when you win. Each attendee has access to a full ToolKit of information, including election requirements, the forms that have to be filed as well as many other resources for planning to make a run for the Assembly or School Board. Check back on this page for the 2023 Toolkit as we get closer to the Workshop date. In the meantime, check out the elections website for a peak of what was included in last year’s toolkit.

CBJ Assembly Recruiting Experienced Leader To Serve as Next City Manager

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly is actively recruiting for an experienced leader and dedicated public servant to serve as the next City Manager.

Following three decades of CBJ service, City Manager Rorie Watt will retire on September 30, 2023. A new City Manager will be appointed by the Assembly to begin duties in September.

The City Manager is the City’s Chief Operations Officer. Under the Assembly’s direction and authority, the City Manager actively implements policy directives and oversees the City’s administrative and day-to-day activities. This includes preparing and monitoring the annual budget and supervising all department directors.

The City Manager manages a municipal government of 641 employees (FTEs) and an overall budget of $360 million. In addition to the core departments, the municipality also operates several major facilities including Juneau International Airport, Docks & Harbors, Bartlett Regional Hospital, and Eaglecrest Ski Area.

For this complex and demanding position, the City and Borough of Juneau seeks a passionate, visionary, and decisive servant leader. The ideal candidate will have executive management experience, financial management expertise, strong communications and interpersonal skills, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, a commitment to transparency and community engagement, and the highest standards of professional ethics.

The Assembly City Manager Recruitment Committee will conduct an initial review of applications and recommend 2-4 finalists, who will be interviewed by the full Assembly on site. The committee will begin reviewing applications Thursday, June 22.

Assembly To Hold Public Hearing on Registration Program for Short-term Rentals

The Assembly will hold a public hearing at the June 12 Regular Assembly Meeting on a proposed registration program for short-term rental operators.

At its March 1 Finance Committee meeting, the Assembly received an update on the use of short-term rentals in Juneau. Short-term rentals are more commonly thought of as apartments and houses that can be rented for brief periods of time over platforms like Airbnb and VRBO. The update identified several ongoing challenges in communicating with rental operators, ensuring fair and equitable sales tax compliance, and measuring the role of short-term rentals in the city economy.

As a result, CBJ staff are recommending a no-cost registration requirement for short-term rental operators in order to provide better information to the Assembly and community on the use of short-term rentals in Juneau.
