CBJ Assembly makes appointments to Hospital Board

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly made three appointments to the Bartlett Regional Hospital Board on Tuesday, December 15, at a Special Assembly Meeting.

The Assembly appointed new members Rosemary Hagevig and Kenneth Solomon-Gross and reappointed Brenda Knapp. All three members will serve two-year terms beginning on January 1, 2021.

The Assembly would like to thank all those individuals who submitted applications for consideration. There are a number of vacancies currently open on CBJ boards; application forms and additional information for all the CBJ boards and commissions are available online here.

Planning Commission and Hospital Board have open seats. Apply by Nov. 30.

The City and Borough of Juneau is currently seeking applicants for the Planning Commission and the Bartlett Regional Hospital Board. Applications must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, November 30. In an effort to diversify membership on CBJ boards and commissions, and to bring in a wide range of viewpoints and life experiences, the Juneau Assembly encourages all community members who have the time and interest to submit an application. Applicants for the Planning Commission and Hospital Board will be sent interview questions. Those who return the questions will be scheduled for a 10-minute interview with the full Assembly sitting as the Human Resources Committee, tentatively scheduled for mid-December.

The nine-member Planning Commission reviews and updates the Comprehensive Plan and Capital Improvement Program, as well as city and state projects. The Commission also reviews private and public development plans for compliance with adopted codes and plans, and functions as the Board of Adjustment in reviewing variances and code interpretations. Meetings are scheduled on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. There are three open seats.

The Bartlett Regional Hospital Board of Directors governs the hospital. The hospital is an enterprise fund, which empowers the board with the responsibility for the economic viability and oversight of management of medical and operational issues. Regular Hospital Board meetings are generally held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. There are three open seats.

CBJ has more than 30 boards, commissions, committees, and task forces. Individuals that serve on a board are part of the backbone of local government. Once received, applications are forwarded to the Assembly Human Resources Committee for consideration and appointment recommendations go to the Assembly for final action.

Nov. 7 Assembly retreat: goals, finances & racial equity

During its annual retreat on Saturday, the Juneau Assembly will hear presentations on Juneau’s economic outlook and the City and Borough of Juneau’s financial forecast, review its 2020 goals and discuss 2021 goals, and take part in a dialogue on racial equity with the First Alaskans Institute. The retreat will occur 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on November 7 at the Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall. The agenda will be available here by Friday, November 6.

This will be an in-person meeting with Assembly members and limited staff. Up to eight seats will be reserved for members of the general public and two for media. Media and public attendees must register by 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, by calling 586-0203; registration involves COVID-19 screening questions. The Assembly retreat is a work session and no public comment will be taken.

During the retreat, all attendees are required to wear masks, be seated at a minimum of 6 feet apart, and pass COVID-19 screening questions day of the retreat. The Central Council of the Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, which owns and manages the EP Hall, has approved a COVID-19 mitigation plan for the event.
