Juneau International Airport joins federal anti-trafficking campaign
The Juneau International Airport will soon launch a public outreach campaign to combat human trafficking. This is part of a formal partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Juneau airport is the first in the state to join the federal effort.
The initiative will be locally coordinated by Deputy Airport Manager Scott Rinkenberger, who will train airport and airline personnel to combat human trafficking within the commercial aviation industry. Awareness trainings will involve how to recognize signs of trafficking and how to report it to authorities. The trainings will extend to staff of airport user groups who have contact with the public.
“Human trafficking is an international problem and neither Alaska, nor any airport, is immune to it. Airline and airport employees that can recognize the signs of a person being forced to travel can save a life. The Juneau International Airport is proud to be the first Alaskan airport to join this Federal partnership to take a stand against human trafficking. If one victim can be intercepted, this joint endeavor it will certainly be worth the effort,” Rinkenberger said.
In addition to awareness trainings, the traveling public will see “safe space” messages in locations throughout their journey, particularly in pre-security areas of high concurrence near the ticket counters, baggage claim and passenger screening checkpoint areas. Awareness materials will be made available to the traveling public and assistance signs will be posted in restrooms and other public areas of the airport. Rinkenberger is also pursuing partnerships with local entities and organizations on the effort.

Holiday travel reminders from Juneau International Airport
The Juneau International Airport has some reminders as more people travel during the holiday season:
- Check the status of flights and allow plenty of time to check in, go through TSA passenger screening, and get on your flight.
- The federal mandate requiring masks inside the airport is still in effect. Please plan accordingly by bringing masks with you and wearing them appropriately over both your nose and mouth.
- The main entrance of the terminal is closed for construction. Please enter through the two baggage claim doors or the new north (commuter) end of the terminal.
- Please remember that when you pick up/drop off passengers at the Juneau airport, you can park for free in the Short Term lot for up to 15 minutes or wait for free at the Cell Phone Lot. The only activity that can take place on the front curb of the airport terminal is active loading and unloading.
- Short Term parking is the lot closest to the terminal and is useful if you need to go inside the terminal for any reason, like to help a passenger collect bags from the baggage carousel or to help a passenger get to the vehicle. After the first 15 minutes, the Short Term lot becomes a paid option; up to 60 minutes costs $3.
- The free Cell Phone Lot waiting area near Alaska Industrial Hardware is an ideal place to wait while a passenger is disembarking the plane and getting luggage. The driver must remain with the vehicle at this lot.
The Juneau International Airport wishes everyone safe and smooth travels during the holiday season.

Airport construction to impact traffic in front of terminal
Ongoing construction at the Juneau International Airport will impact traffic in front of the terminal starting today through next week. City and Borough of Juneau contractor Dawson Construction will be placing a large crane in the vehicle lane closest to the airport terminal today through November 19. Pedestrian access to the terminal will take up the second lane closest to the terminal. With the limited access to the front curb, here are options to safely keep traffic moving:
- Only drive up to the terminal when picking up arriving passengers once they have collected their luggage; or
- For both picking up and dropping off passengers, utilize the short-term parking lot to avoid use of the front curb altogether.
In addition to the traffic changes in front of the terminal, there will be periodic closures to the inside tunnel access between the new North Terminal (Alaska Seaplanes, Island Air) and the South Terminal (Alaska Airlines, car rentals, restrooms, and elevator). During these tunnel closures, pedestrians will need to use the marked detour route.
CBJ and the Juneau International Airport thank airport users for their assistance in maintaining safety throughout the construction project.
